I dabble a bit in content creation by making posts on Reddit for my favourite video game No Man's Sky. What I've noticed over the years is that my posts that get the most attention (comments and upvotes) relate the game to some other thing in popular culture.

In the example below I found an orange glowing bubbly planet and took a screenshot. There was a knowledge stone in the picture that with a transparency trick I superimposed a Fanta can image over it. I was utterly shocked with how that post blew up.

Yesterday I made a mini base where I lined up some creatures that look like Sid from Ice Age. I made it look like a bar, and this too is getting attention on Reddit (I just put on YouTube so it displays here)

So I think if you can make connections between different things people like (and in a novel way) then you can get a lot of interest.

As a beginner in content creation I have noticed so far that:

  1. You can't afford to be mediocre, content out there is so much that you always have to aspire to do something great, aim for the stars;

  2. Sometimes is better to put aside your schedule and "go with the flow", publishing content about something that is actually interesting for the audience here and now;

  3. Consistency: publishing at a regular pace and on a specific time of the day/week/month helps being fresh and present in search engines;

  4. Learning to manage multiple social accounts can help you being discovered faster;

  5. Don't push it too much: audience can detect if you're doing your content out of passion or spamming and throwing stuff out there just for monetization; passion gets you further.

I’m fairly new to content creation, but here are a few tips I received from friends and what I learnt when I was a tour guide and wrote the scripts for my guided tours:

Be passionate about what you do. It makes a huge difference how you talk or how you look on camera, and people who are watching your content are most likely passionate about the same thing you are playing, so let them see your passion!

If you need to keep an audience entertained for a long time, make them laugh. During my guided tours I had a little joke about every 7 mins or so, and it helped to keep people’s attention through the whole tour, no one left halfway looking bored.

Make use of the analytic tools what the different platforms offer, they can be very helpful to figure out which of your videos are more popular or on which platform do they perform better. Sometimes you’ll spend hours on something really good, yet it will only get a few views, while something you made quickly and you don’t think it’s anything special will get a lot of attention. You can use this data to tailor your content in the future.

When you are just starting out, you have nothing to lose, so don’t be afraid to experiment. Established creators can often lose subscribers because they play a different game for one day, and often they don’t have the luxury to afford this. But if you are fresh to the business, you can experiment more freely until you find the right type of content you enjoy doing and people enjoy watching, then you’ll be on a quick road to success.Make friends with other creators who do the same content as you. Sometimes a collab or a mention can get you a long way. We are all in this together, and most of us are happy to support each other.

No 1 is START, just start posting, making videos, streaming or whatever it is about stuff you enjoy, then once you start, post consistently and try and get better at something each time. Watch YouTube videos on how to improve your content, and research what content types each platforms audience are looking for, then once you have made lots of content you should have a better understanding about what you would like to create longer term, as this game is a marathon not a sprint. Then niche down into whatever your topic of choice is like gaming, arts, sport, then niche down again within them for example horror games, or a specific gaming platform or sports nutrition or exercises etc etc. Think of yourself (your content) as a store, like you got to Starbucks for coffee, not to buy a car, so decide what you want to be known for and what audience you want to serve as this will help you grow otherwise if you just do whatever whenever its very hard to grow as your audience doesn't really know what you or your content is all about or why they should stop by. Focus on platforms with good discoverability to help you get discovered by your audience, such as YouTube and tiktok. Learn how to use the analytics on these platforms to further optimize your content to reach your audience by delivering them good content. Also focus on your audience, what they want, not an algorithm. Use relevant hashtags on twitter/X/Mastodon/bluesky etc to get involved in the conversation around your niche. Have genuine interactions with your community. Then don't stop as you could be one post away from big time growth! Hopefully this helps someone starting out! Happy to chat further! :)
