TikTok is a platform I'm still trying to figure out, but if I compare my analytics on it with how my short videos are doing on Youtube, it seems to be the place for shorts, but I also noticed, that most videos only get watched around the time when they have been uploaded, then the views on it stop.

We all know that TikTok is a place for funny videos, but what is considered funny? I tried to make some videos with NPCs from FFXIV, either a cute interaction they do or a funny moment from a cutscene, didn't get too many views. Posted a clip from Twitch, using its clip editor which converted it nicely to vertical format, shared it quite late at night, with tags #twitch and #meme, and it exploded, got over 600 views in 5 minutes and over 800 by the next morning(my most viewed video before didn't even have 200 views, and average views were around 50). Apparently people want to see a raid group being wiped out because someone accidentally pulled the boss early XD

Things to consider when making videos for TikTok:

  • Time of uploading: TikTok videos get most views when you upload them, pick the time well

  • When are your followers online? (consider commuting times to and from work, weekends: breakfast, coffee and TikTok?)

  • Use tags which can get your content to a wider audience (eg #gaming or #twitch instead of tagging a specific game)

  • What will your audience consider funny? We all love seeing people fall over or walk into things right? If you are gaming, consider picking similar moments, something you would like to see in the gag reel of your favourite movie.

Tik Tok is a short form video platform that serves videos to users based on an algorithm regarding the content they consume.

As a creator, it is important to learn how to leverage this algorithm to increase the visibility of your content. There are a few ways that you can do this.

  1. Take advantage of current trends. Is a certain format performing well? Adapt it to your content and send it out!

  2. Use content tags. Tagging content will put your videos in a "box" so that when it is time for the algorithm to serve a new video to a user, it is more likely to select content from a "box" that contains similar content.

  3. Post your videos on other platforms. This may seem counter productive at first glance, but sharing your Tik Tok videos on your Facebook, Twitter, etc leverages audiences that you may have already built to drive traffic and raises awareness that you're even on the platform to begin with

  4. Create engaging content. Content that encourages the user to engage with the creator via comments and likes in an organic manner will rank higher. Try posting things that make people ask questions or share a story of their own!
