All looking good! 👏 ... header area takes up a fair chunk of my screen on desktop though... be nice to reclaim some screen space once I'm viewing a feed/article

damor's avatar

I set zoom level to 80% in Chrome because everything's a bit big.

Rupert's avatar

That's suboptimal! I understand and concur with the header height on desktop (and the "Welcome" notice will soon only be shown to first-time visitors)... but where else would you optimise? (Purely out of interest!)

damor's avatar

I only ever use a 13" laptop. If I'm reading the middle section then it can only fit a few paragraphs because the font size is higher than I would expect and the nav takes a lot of real estate. I just did a test and Reddit fits about 250 words vs Just About's 150 words. 10.5 point font vs 13.5.

Thx! It's always difficult to find the right balance of what should be on the screen or hidden, and thinking about all devices/screen sizes too. As a starting point we felt community nav and the live feed were both really important things to show off to new users. Two things:

  1. Reddit's small font / hardcore interface is a turn off for some people (but the reason other people love it!)! We've deliberately aimed for more accessibility in terms of our own interface. But this is very much v1 and there'll be plenty of optimisations to be found in due course...

  2. I think there's some best practice in terms of line length for readability which we've tried to adhere to, but again isn't for everyone. Ultimately, I think we'll need to give a few customisation options so everybody can have the interface they prefer ie. show or hide nav, show or hide live feed, forum/pro mode, hide images, etc.

... Or maybe it'd be simpler to engage some third-party/community devs to create different interfaces/apps... (too soon??)

Thanks for this @chrisfarms.

We've made a note of that. As more members are invited to join the platform we'll keep gathering feedback and identifying ways to improve.

If there's anything else that you think will improve UX, let us know!

Agree, it does feel a little too big :)

A 'post preview' feature would be really nice! 😊

Big one for me, and possibly relevant for taking on Reddit, is having a text onlyview of discussions within a community.

If I just want to find something interesting, I only want to read post titles and don't need a lot of the UI elements or previews.

Example from the Reddit is Fun app☝️

Rupert's avatar

A setting to switch off images - in the feed but also in posts? - is a good idea - and shouldn't be too tricky! We'll get it on the list. (Also on the list is "Forum view" which would be not too dissimilar to what you're suggesting and more suited to power users)

(With or without images, the actual content in your screenshot is... not quite my cup of tea!)

Aha, frontpage is a doozy. Let me edit that

Design critique here: I think more significantly more content above the fold on the landing page of the community would be great.

Right now, the Just About community has a pinned post and a curated post which always appears at the top - so could look stale quickly.

I expect this would do more to encourage repeat visits and power users.

I've just joined (got the invite the other week but have been away) so have been catching up on posts.

When I've scrolled down the feed, clicked on a discussion, maybe replied then click the back to the feed I was looking at, it would be nice if the site could remember where I was in the feed for that session. At the moment it takes me back to the top of the feed and I have to go back down to find where I was.

I've noticed that there must be a character limit for what is displayed in the feed for discussion titles and the body text. It seems to be approx 30 characters in the title and 80 characters of body text. At least this is how it appears on my mobile.

It feels like this may be a bit limiting for some users who may be used to using more words to get their main idea across.

How about 50 and 100?

Philip's avatar

On mobile, adding images for longer posts is problematic. If you want to post an image near the bottom of the post you need to scroll up to press the + button and it loses your place where you want to insert the image.

A couple of bugs here:

  1. My level has seemingly reset on most screens, but shows the true level whenever I've clicked on someone's profile for some reason.

  2. Sometimes the level doesn't load and instead displays the Join icon. This has only happened once, so could be a simple caching or load time issue that's an anomaly.

  3. When on light mode, it switches to dark mode when clicking on someone's profile.

  4. Adding multiple images to a post results in a paragraph space between them by default. Trying to delete these spaces deletes the picture.

Browsers affected:

  • Firefox Version 120.0

  • Microsoft Edge Version 119.0.2151.97

Thanks Damien, I'll pass these to the tech team to have a look at.

Apologies for the above bug report. I didn't realise this wasn't the proper channel. As for some feedback, perhaps link the bug report section in the hamburger menu under general, right next to feedback.

Boomer's avatar

No worries! We're just looking at a more public-facing way to submit bugs now, and we'll share the link in an upcoming update soon. Thanks for the suggestion 🙂

Any news on the posts that go missing like this one? (it tells you to go to this post to feed back about it in the error). Have seen on 2 x video game posts and 1 staff film post in the last week.

Boomer's avatar

Hi Dave, can I just clarify what you are (or aren't) seeing with the missing posts?

Is it this page you're seeing or something else?

Dave's avatar

Sorry, yeah that's the one.

Boomer's avatar

No need to apologise 🙂I just wanted to make sure we were looking at the same thing.

The discussion seems to be available when I click the link. Does that page appear for you every time? I've asked for more info so I'll see what we can find out.

Dave's avatar

Yeah it comes up with the error page every time I visit it no matter how many times I refresh or visit later. It's the same issue we all had with the one reported here the the other week Lara's Post? | JAJA (justabout.com) . I also had it with the one about viewing figures for the super bowl in sport The Super Bowl was the most-watched US broadcast ever | Just About Sport

although both of those examples seem to be working now.

Can't read your copyright policy the link is erroring out.

Hey dmugirl2008, which link in particular are you clicking from? The one in the 'more' menu (the three dots next to 'Roadmap' in the top nav) is working for me:

Hey JA team, can’t seem to unsave/delete saved posts. Possible bug? Also, it would be good to have the discussion headline in your saved posts for reference. And to be able to see the whole post without having to open the page. Many thanks ☺️

Horror and Cats's avatar

Actually same here and I forgot to say something. I've tried on Android, iOS and PC.

Boomer's avatar

Hey FrostySomething and Horror and Cats, thanks for flagging this up. I've just had a look and can see the delete button to the right of the saved post, but it seems to be broken.

I'll write this one up and pass it to our Tech team. Thanks again 🙂

Hey Sturmer, thanks for flagging this. It seems to be working for me, but I've asked others in the team to test it out.
