What is your role at Just About?

My official title is 'Senior Full Stack Engineer' which basically means that I work on multiple parts of the platform. What I hope it doesn't mean is that I'm just a jack of all trades, master of none... I'll let my colleagues decide on that!

Why did you join Just About, and where did you work before?

I worked as a Lead Full Stack Engineer at a crypto-based company that specialised in fundraising for new startups. I still very much follow crypto even though it definitely has its pitfalls and I know that it's a very Marmite topic! I joined JA as development was starting to slow at the previous role and I wanted a fresh new challenge. Luckily there haven't been too many hurdles at JA, but there's plenty to get stuck into!

How did you get started in the industry?

I've always been into computers and did the odd job in development in my teens. The natural progression then, of course, was to go to university to become... a chiropractor?! Honestly, I'm not quite sure why either. I did that for a number of years before actually deciding to retrain and enter the world of software engineering proper, and it was absolutely the correct choice. I love it ❤️

The non-work stuff

What is your favourite;

• Game - League of Legends. It was toxic and downright frustrating but I loved it anyway.

• Film - Goodfellas and Cool Runnings are the films I can watch over and over.

• Book - Harry Potter, I'm sorry it's not more interesting but I love them.

• Band - A few (a bit more mainstream) but I'll just say Eminem and blink-182 for brevity.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where and why?

I get pretty greedy for the sun when it comes out so I guess I would choose somewhere that is consistently warm. I went to Morocco last new year and that was ace; I could imagine living there if my French was a little better and if I could speak any Arabic at all!

What did you want to be when you were a kid?

I was pretty laid back and never really had a plan. I went from wanting to be a basketball player to games developer to rocket scientist. Turns out, I ended up doing none of them 🤷‍♂️

Share a hobby you currently have

Basketball! Although the dreams of the NBA have faded, I still kid myself that I'm any shade of good when playing in my local league.
