Just About goes mobile! Test our major mobile update and tell us what you think

The Just About platform has made some fairly significant changes in the nine or so months since we first entered Alpha, and today marks another important milestone - a rebuild of the mobile experience. The update has just gone live very and features a full overhaul of platform navigation, the live feed, and the header buttons.

We’re excited to share this so soon after the launch of the WASD community, as it means using the platform while out and about - say, at a gaming show - is now a much smoother experience.

We’re really keen to hear your feedback on the new updates, so in lieu of today’s Thursday Thoughts, please leave a reply on your mobile and let us know what you make of it.

Im getting a loading issue on a fresh visit to the site roughly 4 in 5 visits (occasionally it works). On brave (with shields down/all blockers off) and in normal chrome on android.

Basically it sits like the below forever with the grey boxes scrolling left to right loading animation, but as soon as you even slightly scroll then everything loads in.

I'm going to speculate there is some java script that is set to be delayed to only load in at the start of an interaction/scroll and that's why it then all loads in and formats as soon as you do this. Just an educated guess, I haven't actually looked to see what it's doing.

sometimes I'm getting too many redirect errors. There are many activities in the background, no wonder brave struggle to load it

Brave is not good on desktop (especially video playback with hardware acceleration switched on), so I don't use it on desktop. But on mobile I find it's the most chrome like experience that has the laziest/simplest, but most effective ad blocking. Also you can disable JavaScript on a per site basis (which is great for bypassing some news paywalls) and most mobile browsers you can only set things like that globally.

This initial page load issue happens in normal chrome mobile as well though.

I had this first few times on mobile to using safari browser on iOS, seems ok now tho for me 🙌

Thanks Dave! The tech team are taking a look at this to see if they can work out what's causing the issue. We don't have an ETA on a fix (yet) but we're on the case! 🤝

Love the new bar at the bottom, looks very neat!

Probably one thing missing from the mobile version is to see the bounty timers as you scroll through the bounty feed? Without that you need to go into each to check when they close.

if you tilt your phone into landscape orientation it should expand and show you the timer. But yeah I agree with your feedback would be a lot nicer to see that when scrolling normally on mobile 👌

Great note Lanah Tyra! I can tell you for a fact that I have a meeting slated for next week to discuss improvements to the way bounties display on the site and this is now on the agenda as part of that meeting 🤝

Sorry I know this is probably annoying when you get a release into production and then the comments are picking little faults, but I found a minor issue.

The more button below a main post sits over the top of the activity feed when you slide it out, instead of under it. See below:

I'd say the whole 'Notification' (bell) UI should be in line with 'live feed' UI. I like how it is compact.

Do you mean that the notifications dropdown should be more like the compact fly-out live feed, where there are more items visible in a smaller space (especially for mobile) Sturmer? If so, I couldn't agree more! I've heard rumblings about a notifications refresh somewhere in the pipeline. I'll chase it up and make sure this is part of the spec 🙏

Yup, 'live feed' now is compact, with fair information density (no empty spaces, text size is just right and comfort to read). While 'bell' UI is more spacious, it's ok for 1080p monitor, not for mobile screen. I can make a comparison screenshot if you want.

Absolutely! Keep it coming Dave! The more overlap is on our radar already as it also happens on desktop 😬. I'm fairly sure it's slated for an upcoming release so should be fixed quite soon 🙏

Report button is missing in portrait and only shows in landscape view. It can't fit so it should show up under "more..." But does not. This is important for a community focussed on no toxicity, to not have report so hidden away (not a problem today but it's sure to be in the future when large numbers arrive).

Great catch Dave! I am logging that bug in our system right now. As you say, reporting is essential and I made a personal promise to Boomer to ensure it was never lost or too hidden when we re-engineered the reactions toolbar so I'll chase this one down myself ASAP 🤝

With all these little bugs I'm posting, I should probably put a positive post as well! I really like the the new mobile interface, the pop out menu for live feed is great and they are super smooth as well when sliding out!

Has the feel of a mobile app interface and it's really nice, clean and well formatted.

I only really use the site via mobile and everything works well.

A couple of things though...

The screen can scroll erratically when typing a reply and sometimes the input can disappear off screen
The add socials screen is cut off at the bottom - needs more padding

Anyone else having just a loading type screen like this one in my screen grab every time they go to JA on mobile? I should add this happens each time I go to the site and I need to refresh the page to gain access and allow the page to properly load
