The best albums of 2024 in my opinion are those focused on themes of hope, love and faith. I like them because, despite the darkness that has enveloped this last year between wars, illness and sadness... these songs encourage us to look at the light.

The albums I have chosen are:

Tu mi risponderai - Jeremias Bodden, In equilibrio - Anìma, Cicatrici - Amanda, Alziamo la voce - Upper Room, Non mi fermo - PDG Worship

All the albums are in Italian and vary in genres, suitable for both younger and older audiences. They talk about current issues but with an eye on overcoming problems.A look at how to face each single battle, seeking the strength and faith that only God can give. You can adore, you can relax, you can dance with these 5 albums and especially the first one shows how a young artist can be, in technique, similar to the big ones.

I had to do some double checking to remember what did and did not come out this year (Did you know Blind Guardian's "The God Machine" was 2022?) But here are my five favorite albums from this year, in order of release.

Hazbin Hotel (original soundtrack)

Depending on who you talk to, this particular adult animation series was either great, problematic, or a little Hit or Miss. Putting the show itself aside for a moment, I really liked the music. They brought in some strong talent for this and I'd say it paid off.

Voyage (The Longest Johns)

So remember how Sea Shanties (or at least a sea shanty) got popular for a second during the empty arena era? People have been performing and enjoying those songs both before those heady days and in the time since, The Longest Johns being one of the more prominent groups. This album featured original songs, historic shanties, and even a Creedence Clearwater Revival cover. It's a fun listen and honestly I'd say it's worth checking out even if you're really into shanties.

Rite Here Rite Now (Ghost)

Officially released as the soundtrack for Ghost's theatrical film (which expanded on the lore from their Youtube videos and finally gave us a conclusion to Cardinal Copia/Papa Emeritus IV's story a year after his final show), in practice it's a live album covering the last two nights of 2023 Re-Imperatour. The setlist has all the big songs you'd expect to see from Papa & the Nameless Ghouls, plus one song that played over the film's ending credits. I love live recordings, and this one slots easily into my library.

Yesterwynde (Nightwish)

FIrst off my sincere gratitude (and apologies) to the Just About user who mentioned this in a previous bounty; I cannot for the life of me remember your name, but without you I wouldn't have realized this had come out. Yesterwynde is a bit different of a sound compared to my go-to Nightwish album (2004's Once), but it was no less enjoyable. It definitely scratched my itch for new symphonic metal, and easily earned a place in my top 5.

From Zero (Linkin Park)

Like many, I wasn't sure how to feel about Linkin Park returning without Chester Bennington. And like many, I was pleasantly surprised. But after some early controversy about their choice(s) of vocalist, they stuck the landing. Much like with Nightwish, it's not exactly what I remember, but it is still excellent. It's good to see that arguably the most influential band from my younger days has still got it.

#1 // Linkin Park - From Zero

To be honest, I wasn't sure if they could do it. Reinventing one of the most popular rock bands in the world is no small feat - but they've done it and the music is amazing. From Zero turned out to be a beautiful, varied album I can listen to from beginning to end without skipping a song. I will be a lifelong fan. I'm so happy the name Linkin Park lives on. I honestly can't wait for what's next after they're done touring and had some time to recharge.

#2 // Solar Fake - Don't Push This Button!

I discovered this band at a low point in my life, shortly after the release of their previous album, Enjoy Dystopia. While Don't Push This Button! doesn't quite reach the same heights, it's still a beautiful dark synth-pop album. I've got the physical release of the special edition right behind me. Definitely a highlight of my year.

#3 // Eminem - The Death of Slim Shady

There is no way I'm skipping an album release of one of my top 3 hip-hop lyricists. Despite the fact that this is a concept album, Eminem's wordplay still shines as bright as ever on this album.

#4 // Tech N9ne Collabos - COSM (Class of Strange Music)

The Collabos albums have always brought together the best of what Strange Music has to offer. But the industry is shifting again, a lot of artists went out on their own. That didn't stop Tech's efforts of bringing current and former artists back for another collaboration project. I'm not sure if there will ever be another one, so this one's special to me.

#5 // Static-X - Project Regeneration Volume 2

The current members of Static-X have made sure the legacy of Wayne Static lives on, by turning demos and otherwise unreleased material as well as the last studio recordings of Wayne into two album releases, Volume 1 and 2. While I missed out on getting an autograph from Wayne when he was still alive, I've now got an autographed version of Volume 2 on my music shelf. Evil Disco forever!

  1. Justice - Hyperdrama

I've been a fan of Justice since high school. Admittedly, I wasn't crazy about most of their stuff since the debut album. But, for some reason, when I saw the artwork, and heard the singles promoting this release, I got really excited. I preordered the limited edition on vinyl, and went out of my way to make sure I didn't hear any of the other songs on the record until I got my copy and could listen on my system. So glad I did, because the flow of this album is great in my opinion. Crisp, new, funky, French electro. A no-skip for sure.

  2. Joey Valence & Brae - NO HANDS

I heard a clip of the first track "BUSSIT" on Tiktok one day, and was like "Whoa who the hell is this??". Very reminiscent of Beastie Boys, these self-produced guys go wild on the mic. The tracks on this record vary from old school hip-hop, to jazz, to club bangers, to straight up techno. You can tell they just do this because they're having fun. That attitude is so refreshing in 2024, when everyone's out for the quick bucks. Banger.

  3. Gesaffelstein - Gamma

Legitimately had to check the release date on this when I first heard it. Sounds like it came through a wormhole from 1987. Never thought I'd get to hear a new, popular, darkwave record in 2024, but here we are. Gesaffelstein started out featuring A-list artists on his previous records, seemingly attempting to be a pop production factory. Then this album dropped. A total left turn. The singer on the record, Yan Wagner, perfectly compliments the dark ambiance with his baritone vocals. Pumping electronic beats, droning synths, and raw attitude.

  4. Magdalena Bay - Imaginal Disk

This experimentation on this record is a trip. The vocals keep you floating along, while the production introduces every color you can imagine. It exists in a space where groovy meets dreamy, where danceable meets mellow vibes. I feel like the instruments on this record can only be described with onomatopoeia. The bass cronches and the synths plonk. Listen to this whole album if you want to travel through space and time.

  5. RM - Right Place, Wrong Person

You've likely picked up on a trend here - I like deviation and experimentation. RM, if you don't know, is a member of the Kpop group BTS. Kpop artists are expected to be perfect, fit in a box, and never venture in any direction that could alter their image. Their image is the product. However, I think BTS got so big, and so successful, the artists seem to have gained some of that freedom back. This record has all the elements I love to see in a great modern hip-hop record. It's fun and vibey, jazzy and groovy, dark and uplifting.

This was quite hard to choose, but here are my 5 favorite albums in 2024.

  • Lo by Paula Cole (March 1, 2024)
Love her voice since the Where Have All the Cowboys Gone song, this new album feels different like a self dedication. The song Flying Home helped me to surpass the pain of losing a good friend that passed away in 2023.

  • Yesterwynde by Nightwish (September 20, 2024)
From a symphonic metal band here they deliver us a real symphonic album i consider this piece of art my number one in 2024 for my personal taste. i consider Yesterwynde the most mature album that showcases Nightwish's metamorphosis as a band while at the same time we received a piece of the heart of its mastermind Tuomas Holopainen exploring nostalgia, loss, and the search for meaning.

  • From Zero by Linkin Park (November 15, 2024)
Since Chester Bennington death, for the fans has being hard to find or accept a replacement for the band, somehow Mike Shinoda found a way incorporating Emily Armstrong as the new singer and while a lot accepted her some o us are still struggling to, but after hearing the album i perceive clear messages of loss, grief, hope and redemption, things that Chester itself would love.

  • Saviors by Green Day (January 16, 2024)
This album have a mixture of Green Day punk rock old school essence and the new alternative rock wave. Love the album for its song lyrics that make reference to various modern social and political issues today, including the American Dream, gun violence, and environmentalism.

  • Gamma by Gesaffelstein (March 29, 2024)
My nephew in New York send me this artist thorught WhatsApp, he know i love Depeche Mode dark style and invited me to listen that album, since that day i enjoy their music. of course you can perceive a more aggressive dark sound than DM, with a little touch of industrial music and the 80's synthwave. The entire album its exquisite especially if you are a Depeche Mode fan that is constantly craving hear this dark and enigmatic music style back again.

  1. Falling in Reverse - popular monster

This band is a status in metal music. Also they made an universe with official videos where the frontman made himself like a God. The title song called "Ronald" is a MASTERPIECE. Evolution and mixing metal music with rap and other sounds.

  1. Hand of Juno - psycotic banana

The frontwoman of this band is pure energy. The drummer (woman) is the genius behind most of themusic. A combo that made this band one of the greatest discovery of this year.

  1. Fulci - duck face killings

This band made music about horror movies of the master Lucio Fulci. Combination of horror theme with totally brutal music bring all metal lovers right in the Fulciverse made with mostly zombies. I love them!

  1. Eminem - the death of Slim Shady

We all agreed: the return of Eminem who just "joke" about himself and diss the world is one of the headexplosion of the year. Also Eminem is a status symbol, no other words needed.

  1. Blink 182 - one morte time part 2

As the title say with the blink 182 one more time could be forever because their music is so freaking cool! They remember us we are still young, no? YES!

Hans Zimmer - Dune: Part Two BSO

Stunning work by Hans Zimmer... elevates the film to another level and perfectly captures everything that Dune, the Fremen, the Harkonnen, etc. represent. I have a special love for TOTO's soundtrack from the 1984 film, but I have to admit that Zimmer does an incredible job in this new 2-part version.

As a lover of soundtracks, and of Frank Herbert's work, I can't stop listening to it.

Judas Priest - Invincible Shield

Return after 6 years since their last studio album... more powerful than ever, keeping that fantastic level, those frenetic rifts and with the incombustible voice of Rob Halford.

When I need energy and someone to recharge my batteries, what better than the Metal God?

Tribal Alliance - Mountain Realm & Tales under the Oak

Possibly the best Dungeon Synth album of all this 2024... very much in the vein of Tribal Alliance's previous works, and as evocative and immersive as ever.

Irreplaceable for all my role-playing and board game sessions.

Shabaka Hutchings - Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace

This impressive work, based mainly on the delightful sounds of the shakuhachi, but with an innumerable range of instruments, takes modern jazz to the next step. Delicate but emotionally intense.

When I need a bit of peace and quiet, this album always does the job.

Piotr Musiał ~ Frostpunk 2 BSO

Anyone who has played this magnificent game will agree on how brilliant this BSO is... for me the best videogame BSO of all 2024; orchestral music like lots of strings, wind, percussion, and chamber voices that will leave you frozen... as it should be.

This album is more than just ‘the background’ of the game, and many nights it often accompanies me before I go to sleep.
