Introduce yourself to Just About Music!

A very warm welcome to Just About Music (aka JAMS)!

This community Space is for everyone who loves ‘organised sound’, in the broad definition my school music teacher once offered.

We’re only a small community at the moment, so let’s get to know each other better. This thread is for anyone and everyone to say a quick hello and introduce themselves. You could talk about your favourite genres or artists, how you became a music lover and your best memories of live shows, or just tell us a little about yourself and how you came across Just About.

My name’s Rich and I’m the Community Content Lead here at Just About. It’s my job to figure out what you folks want to see on your communities and then deliver it through our bounties, discussions, and curated content, and as a massive music fan, I’m thrilled to be overseeing Just About Music. So if you have any questions or suggestions about the content here, just tag me Rich, or our Community Manager Boomer for moderation issues.

My favourite genres are rock and metal. Like many millennials it was the likes of The Offspring, Green Day, and Blink-182 that first got me into this music in the late ‘90s, and I’ve kept exploring since its time in the charts has mostly ended. Favourites include but are by no means limited to Slipknot, Blood Youth, and Rammstein on one end of the ‘heaviness’ scale to Jimmy Eat World and The Gaslight Anthem on the other, with plenty more in between.

I’m not just about guitar-driven music, though; I’m one of those people that likes a little of everything, and I still confound my metalhead friends with my albeit more casual enjoyment of EDM, jazz, R&B, British folk music, and classical. I’m looking forward to learning all about you and creating a fun and friendly community to explore this amazing medium together!

Hi! I’m Alex, I work as a Content Manager for Just About. While I’m mostly involved in Just About Nightingale, EVE Online, Film & TV, and Tech, I also love music. I know, I know - who doesn't, right?

I pride myself on my finely tuned Spotify playlists; rather than splitting them by genre, I’ve organised them by mood. I have 50 of them, covering every emotion on the human emotional spectrum… or at least on my emotional spectrum. I listen to a lot of soul, hip hop, Britpop, and rock of all varieties. But if I had to choose a genre, it would be 70s political folk rock, think Bob Dylan, Buffalo Springfield, Rodriguez, and Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Until 2020, I never had any success playing instruments. I bought an electric guitar when I was 15, but I mostly just posed with it and bought lots of accessories I didn’t know how to use. Out of all my overly ambitious lockdown hobbies, however, playing instruments stuck. I started with a harmonica and upgraded to a mandolin. I now spend my weekends writing songs with my flatmates. Our latest attempt is a D&D-themed duet called The Eye of the Beholder, because even in my coolest hobby, I’m still a massive nerd ✊

I can't tell you how many people I've recommended Searching for Sugarman to. Just remembering the moment where he first walks out on stage in SA gives me chills.

I do know Charles Bradley, I discovered him not long before he passed. What a voice! I hadn't heard of Soul of America, but I've just added it to my to-watch list. Thanks for the recommendation!

Hello! I'm excited to see how this space evolves as it grows.

I can play the guitar, all be it not well. A friend of mine offered me lessons many years ago and I still occasionally pick it up to see what I can remember. I remember in grade school, our band teacher was the director of the band at the local university. I played the trumpet and he kicked me out of the band because "You aren't taking your musical career seriously enough". He said that to an 11-year-old.

My all-time favorite band is Weezer. The Blue Album is the first CD I ever bought with my own money and I've even got a Weezer tattoo. Ska will always hold a place in my heart, I went and saw Reel Big Fish in 2019 and it was like I had been transported to 1997, smells and all. Classic Rock, including stuff from the early to mid-90s that is lumped into classic rock now, is in normal rotation. The obsession for the last 18 months has been Chvrches, per my 2023 wrap up I listened to over 30,000 minutes of their music. They just popped up in a random playlist in 2022 and it's been non-stop ever since. My goal for this year was to see them in concert no matter where in the US they visit, but sadly they most likely won't be touring this year.

Concerts are tough for me anymore. They are getting so expensive and people don't act the best in public after 2020. What venue the concert is at has a large impact, as well as what I know of the artist's fans. Todd Snyder is a great singer/songwriter and folk-type musician who is a wonderful person, but his fans are the absolute worst. My two favorite concerts have been Jane's Addiction and Joe Walsh/Tom Petty.

We'd seen Tom Petty two times before and both of those were great. This was his last tour before he passed away and you could tell all of them were just having a great time performing. We primarily went to see Joe Walsh as I'd never seen him and really wanted to. For all the drugs and hard living he did, he was still great.

One of my favorite interviews I've ever heard was with Joe talking about a conversation he had with Ozzy Osbourne. They couldn't remember all the tours they did together, but know they did several because they have the posters.

FABULOUS! - A Music community!

I am nuts about music. Music has been a huge part of my life from since i can remember. I'm 43 now, but i reckon probably 35 or maybe more years.

All that said, i love heavy metal, and specifically metallica. Metallica is my favourite band ever, and i have seen them 40-odd times, own all their back catalogue in a variety of formats, and even own a 72 Seasons fully signed test pressing - which is, i believe, one of only around 20 in circulation internationally!

outside of metallica, i love a huge variety of other music styles, from Jeff buckley, to Slayer, and right back to Jimi Hendrix, the Stones, Air, to Angelo Badalamenti (RIP), and right back to Nick Cave, to Placebo, to Dadi Freyr (go check him out!). Lots and lots of variety and scope. My mix-tapes were always a touch bonkers. Blues, grunge, emo, metal, atmospheric, theatrical to name a few!

Album that I think changed my life - Ride The Lightning, Metallica.

Artists that i hated when released (or just didnt get), but now love - Jeff Buckley

Songs that i wish i had written - Bitter End, Placebo

The weird disjointed guitar solo from 'We Used To Vacation' blew my mind when I first heard it at 16 - on Radio 2 in my Dad's car of all places 🤯. I haven't listened to it for a while either but I might have to give it a run through this evening now.

Do any other 'perfect 10s' spring to mind for you Thomas? I reckon Loyle Carner's Not Waving but Drowning' could sneak into mine...

Hey folks! I'm Jason, but most people call me Boomer. I'm the Community Manager and you'll probably be seeing a lot of me here, not because of my role, but because I'm really into my music!

Funnily enough, the photo I used for my Meet the Team article was taken at a festival, though I'd be beyond impressed if you could guess which one from that photo alone!😄

I tend to lean heavier in my tastes, with Iron Maiden and Metallica kickstarting my love of rock and metal. I've probably seen Iron Maiden a dozen or so times, and Metallica were my favourite band for the longest time, but they were dethroned when I saw Kamchatka perform live in tiniest tent at a festival.

The lead singer/guitarist had some issues with his pedals while they were in the middle of a song, so what did he do? He got on with fixing them while singing in his second language and absolutely nailing it on guitar. Totally converted then and there!

Here are some songs I'd recommend, but honestly their first three albums are amazing.

Hello! My name's Thomas and I'm very happy to have this space here because I live and breathe music! My favourite music tends to be grunge-adjacent but I love hip hop, dance music, electronica, jazz, trying my best not to say "everything". Recently I've been obsessed with JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown's album, Scaring the Hoes, it's absolutely wild.

As I said in my Meet The Team post, I'm a musician and songwriter myself, and I'd really love to hear from anyone here who also makes music, especially if it's online somewhere I can hear it!

My musical taste was set early on by my dad constantly listening to Queen, but after he passed away I had to listen to the stuff on the radio my mother had on until I managed to get my hands on a Walkman and listen to my dad's old cassette tapes.

Then in high school someone showed me Nightwish and that quickly started my love for symphonic metal and bands with female singers. Evanescence and Within Temptation still being big favourites to this day.

Then my first boyfriend showed me Sonata Arctica and I started to add power metal bands to my favourites too. Whenever I went to a concert in Hungary, the headliner brought on an amazing support band, so next time I went to see them on a headliner and guess what? The support band was amazing.... so more concerts!

My favourite band is Serenity from Austria. Been there from almost the beginning and love to see how they grew in popularity and how they still keep the same style I got to love them for. The singer is a history and geography professor so most of their songs are history lessons:
