Companions are quite useful at gardening! They can not just swing an axe or a mining pick, but also plant seeds into pots or garden boxes. Sadly they cant use watering cans, or help harvesting, but still they can help to speed up process of getting seeds into soil and save few clicks.

If you put a basket with seeds inside and acess to survivors, then companion will grab seeds from there. Please note, they taking 1 seed at a time and then plant it, if you want to speed up the process, it's more convenient simply trade them stack of seeds.

USE YOUR COMPANION AS BAIT

For some unknown reason, all of my companions have had the uncanny ability to attract Harpy's to themselves in every version of a swamp. The ancient horrors surround these folk and do a little barfing dance, entirely unaggressive each time.

Let us not ponder the why's and how's but rather the who's- as in who can benefit from such a phenomenon? Certainly not the NPC. But you can. Need ink? Perch on a nearby rock, drop a quick storage, and wait for the coven of critters to silently stalk in and barf into your bag as they shimmy about your friend in this bizarre, potential mating ritual.

Need them for mats? Maintain safe distance and snipe em one by one as companion keeps their... eye? eye contact and sadly eventual aggression.

I did warn you they wouldn't benefit from this.

Can you make a video please? I have never seen such behavior with my companion, harpies usually just run to bite my face!

A Caring Mule: Leveraging Your Companions as Mobile Storage in Construction Projects

When tackling large construction projects, one of the best ways to utilize your companions is by turning them into efficient carriers. Companions like Nell, my 'reliable' helper, can carry thousands of kilograms of building materials because their carrying capacity is virtually unlimited. This makes them indispensable as mobile storage units, especially for heavy items like rocks; Nell once carried over 2,500 gilded lumber (which I believe is around 12,5 tons), enabling me to focus on building without constant supply runs.

Important Considerations:

  • Reliability: Always be cautious with what you entrust to your companions. Avoid giving them expensive or irreplaceable items like stacks of paint, as they might disappear with them.

  • Crafting Interference: Companions tend to automatically fill stoves and campfires with whatever they carry. To prevent the loss of valuable materials, either keep them away from crafting stations or ensure these stations are already filled with less valuable items.

These tips ensure that companions not only help you carry the load but also contribute efficiently without causing disruptions to your project workflow.

While the companions can sometimes be a nuisance, there's no doubt that they do have many uses - especially for solo players!

Here are my tips for getting the most out of your companion (with the least headaches!)

1 - Never give them wood to carry unless you're harvesting it for fuel. If you did end up giving them high-tier or rare wood and it goes missing, check your fires. That's where it went.

2 - As soon as you have access to "charm of the leader," equip it. It raises your companion's health and damage, upping the chances they'll save you if you get KO'ed in a fight.

3 - Your companion levels up with you, so you don't need to create high-level gear to to equip them with. Since they've been known to disappear at times, you don't want to do that anyway. Leave them with their clothes and gear you got them with. The only exceptions are a level 320+ axepick and knife. Equip the axepick when resource gathering and they will gather things they find, too. Equip the knife in battles. It's easily the highest-damage melee weapon in the game.

4 - Never allow your companion to wield any tools or weapons while trying to peacefully complete the first hunt realms, or in any tier 3 swamp realm where there are likely to be grendels. They will attack, causing you to miss the peaceful completion option of those missions, or causing you to have to accidentally kill a grendel (noooooo!)

5 - While you don't want to give them your wood to carry, DO give them anything else that is heavy and also expendable, especially if you're encumbered! Stones, gems, and ores weigh a lot, they do not have a carry limit, so you can use them to take the heaviest parts of your haul to maximize resource-gathering within realms. Just make sure you hang on to that wood, and anything ultrarare/irreplacable!

6 - Tired of having too many tools and not enough slots? Give the tools you use in realms the least but still sometimes need (for me, these are the sickle and the spyglass!) to your companion. Swap them out when you need them, keeping your hotbar nice and neat without a lot of excess tools in your inventory.
