I work at a sight loss charity and as one of the more tech savy of the helpline team I have looked at a few apps that can support those with sight loss.

The best one I have found is also useful to people with all kinds of difficulties.

This app lets people inform train staitions of a persons needs ahead of time.

Its a really easy app (depending on difficulty of course) and can make an otherwise scary and dangerous journy as stress free as possible.

I believe its on IOS as well as android.

Trading 212

im not interested in trading. im not intelligent enough.

but they do offer a FCS protected cash isa account that lets you deposit and withdraw as much as you like so you have access to it. and it pays 5.2% interest every day. So if you ever have money sitting there doing nothing you just get free daily paid interest for nothing !

Hard agree. Making it big on NVidia at the moment. Going passed the moon and to the next galaxy across if the projections are acorrect

Interesting! That must be the best cash ISA rate going.

Apart from the standard social media apps, I recommend Sleep Cycle. It is a sleep tracking app that helps detect how you're sleeping, accounts for different variables for when you're sleeping: temperature, city, time going to sleep, and my favourite feature - smart wake up. You set a 30 minute period when you want to wake up and then app will detect when you're coming out of REM and slowly increase the sound of your ringer to wake you up gradually rather than suddenly.

I have had it where it's like I'm naturally waking up because I hear my alarm entering my dream and it is a lot nicer than suddenly being hit with bleeps in the middle of your sleep

Sturmer's avatar

Could you please explain how the device detects sleep cycles? Even my wearable devices seem to be inaccurate in this regard.

Makster's avatar

I'm unsure I just use it man haha.
I assume its by detecting sound as it can pick up coughing in the other room. If you place it on the bed it'll monitor movement using the phone gyroscope

Lanah Tyra's avatar

Do you need any smart watch / fitness tracker for this or just the app on the phone?

Makster's avatar

You don't need a smartwatch for this, just an app on the phone.

In-fact there is a subreddit related to this app and I ran a poll on there asking the same question. The majority of users just used the phone microphone or the phone gyroscope

I watch a lot of series and movies, so one of my favorite apps for my freetime is trakt.

With trakt, you can keep track of your TV/streaming series and movies. I prefer it over Letterboxd, because trakt also covers series and not only movies. The watchlists, calendar, and dashboard are easy tools for staying up to date and finding out when that new season starts airing. Of course you can leave a score per episode as well.

https://apps.apple.com/de/app/trakt/id1514873602https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=tv.trakt.trakt&

It's nothing groundbreaking and won't enhance the quality of your life, but if you happen to be into series and movies, I can recommend trakt. The website works fine but their iOS and Android apps are in my opinion very good.

A handful of features are behind a paywall and I'm subscribed to these features, so I'm definitely biased - but you can just try it for yourself and see what you think! And then join 👇

Since joining here I've been a lot more interested in being rewarded for doing things that I'm doing anyway and the platform is profiting off (in theory). With that being something we all have in common on here, I suggest the app called onepulse.

https://www.onepulse.com/onepulse-app/

Before you dismiss it as the same as the ton of other survey apps that pays next to nothing for a massive amount of time and data. Let me explain.... So I've tried out lots of these survey apps and this one is the most interesting to take part in I have found, and it must be one of the best when it comes to respecting your time and paying you a fair reward. They do not have an affiliate programme which has resulted in very few people and sites reccomending it (as they don't get paid to).

So basically each survey is called a pulse, instead of a long boring survey, most of them are very topical and fun to do, usually take anything from 5 to 30 seconds. They are more like the sort of polls you would answer that can often be embedded in a news story or on a forum post.

To start with you get 7 cents but as you level up your xp you get more with a 1 cent increase per level. I have been on it 2 weeks and now get 16 cents per paid pulse and on $11 for very little effort.

Most of the pulses are unpaid and are optionally done to increase your level. The paid ones come through as notifications on your phone and there are a steady stream of them through the day, far more than I initially expected. Generally you have to open them within 5 minutes or all the spots have been filled and the pulse closed.

So yeah that's my suggestion and I think a few members on here looking for some extra funds to pay for their games etc might really like it. It's nothing like your usual survey app/site that have endless filter questions that that then rule you out and pay you nothing. These are quick 1/2 question polls on an interesting subject and you are done.

While I do have a pretty decent SIM plan with free roaming pretty much everywhere, there are few places I visited recently, like Taiwan and Ukraine, where'd I'd still have to pay for internet. And I don't know about other service providers, but my one wanted tens of £ for just a few MB A DAY! So for those trips I used aloSIM, which just provides eSIM options for travel abroad at actually reasonable prices for a change.

https://alosim.com/

Sturmer's avatar

Alosim and similar services are still a ripoff. I checked several countries, and for instance, they offer 2GB for 7 days at $6.50, while you can get unlimited data for 7 days for 4.90 EUR in Cyprus.
4.5 USD for 1 GB in Ukraine, while you can get 4 weeks unlimited for ~4.11$ etc

My general recommendation is to do a Google search. There are always guides on which SIM/eSIM is most efficient to get, and you can usually buy one right at the airport.

I sufffer bad with getting to sleep and ive downloaded, installed, unistalled so many help relax/sleeping apps. The one i love and just got a new phone so i downloaded it straight away is rain sounds app.

Its not just rain sounds there is so many you can even add more rain, sea, birds fire, thunder ect

This helps me relax so quickly and sends me on my way to zzz land. Add a 2 hour timer or an hour, perfect.

Squarelets - I got to try it for the first time at WASD 2024 and I have been addicted. Great for long travel journeys and doesn’t need internet to work. The devs are also so lovely, so it’s great to support really friendly people

The best app I have on my phone is TrainPal. Saves me so much money on train travel for work and makes me feel much better about travelling on public transport.

My smartphone app recommendation would be the “No Thanks” app. This app allows you scan in most food or drink items by scanning the barcode and it can tell you if that item is BDS safe or not. It’s a new way to shop ethically and safe and making sure you’re not causing any harm with your purchases.

I often capture photos when visiting beautiful places. Since I usually travel alone, I have to use a tripod or ask others to take pictures of me. Sometimes, the quality of these photos can be poor. That's why I rely on an app called Remini to enhance my photos using its AI features in just a matter of seconds. I love the results, as the enhanced photos are perfect for sharing on social media

Sturmer's avatar

This is my standard curiosity pack. I tend to use it less and less often as I’ve pretty decently learned the world around me, thanks to it. Now, when a sudden bird starts to sing or a rare bug lands on my table, I know what they are.

Each app helps to identify insects, plants, mushrooms, birds or general stuff. The lens I tend to use mostly for translations or to convert photos to text to help with a search.

Flightradar24

A must-have app for travellers and airplane enthusiasts., with plenty of free features. This is my main app to track my flight when going somewhere, as often airport information screens or even the airline apps are not reliable, especially when something is delayed. With this app you will see the aircraft registration number as well so you can follow where it has been and where it's going after your flight. This is very helpful when your flight is delayed due to waiting for an inbound flight, or if a replacement aircraft is being sent, you can easily track its route with this app.

One paid function is an identify the plane feature. You point your camera up to the sky, and the app will identify the airplane you spotted. The other interesting paid feature will also give you weather reports so you can check your flight route to see if you can expect any turbulences or rough landings

So whenever I get a new phone, the first app I download is called Wifi Analyzer, due to my work and of course content creation, I often use my phone on both when either on site or simply recording videos of IRL stuff, so the strength of my signal and where I am, whether it is secure or not, is very important to me.

This app gives me all the know-how and details I need to know before I go ahead and access certain information, servers etc.

Below are screenshots of the app's ability to read the info I need.

As you can see, I can gain a tremendous amount of information about security, location, connection, all of it, plus speed tests and much, much more.

You can find the app here!

Nice, on Android same name, but a different app and whooping 10 mil downloads

WiFi Analyzer (open-source) - Apps on Google Play

But I stopped using it once found a wifi heatmap app that allows me to upload a floor plan and 'probe' signal strength and visualize locations where I need to place mesh nodes, very handy!

I always install a personal safety app on my phone. While there are many alternatives, they all serve the same essential purpose: protecting you. Statistics show that 1 in 3 women experience harassment or stalking, and every 5th woman could be a victim of rape or assault.

These types of apps allow you to quickly or even automatically alert emergency services or trusted contacts when you need help. Sometimes, just revealing that an alert with a photo and coordinates has already been sent can potentially prevent any further harmful actions.

I’d recommend everyone gets and uses DreamLab, it’s an app that you use when you are charging your phone and it uses you phones number crunching power along with many other users to create a sort of hive mind super computer to help find cures and treatments for cancer and covid. Cannot recommend this enough to people and I have been using it for years now and put it on every night when my phone is charging so I’m doing some good whilst I sleep! ❤️ if anyone has had cancer impact their family or friends they will know we need to find a cure asap which is why I use this on my phone whenever I can, it’s just part of my daily habit now. You should too 💪

My app recommendation is an app called Eyeem

Eyeem is a platform for people to share photographs with the main audience being photographers.

You are able to share your photos and like and comment on the photos like you can on other social media platforms and you can also follow each other.

The app also has an in built photo editor that you can use before you submit your photos.

Once you have uploaded, edited and tagged your photos you have the opportunity to submit any photos for review to be placed on the Eyeem marketplace for sale to potentially earn money. Then the Eyeem team will review your picture and if it's accepted it goes on the marketplace.

The app is also a good place to be able to connect with other photographers and be able to look at each others work which could help improve your own work.

They also to photography competitions at times.

Eyeem also has a partnership with Getty images so there's a chance that the photos will be selected for that as well.

I have been enjoying using this app and I even had a few photos selected for the marketplace and as a fairly new person in the photography world it gave me a great sense of achievement, I would recommend this app to anyone that has a interest in photography.
