I'm considering buying a mid-range VR headset. I'm leaning towards the Quest 3S 125GB, which is on sale for £275. Would you say that's a good purchase?

I get the feeling this is going to be a big seller this xmas as I've had loads of people ask me about this in real life if it's worth getting/what I think of it.
The 3s is basically the quest 2 screen and lenses with a handful of extras (and longer hardware/OS support). The normal 3 has a better screen and better lenses but the price difference is a bit like ps5 to ps5 pro I reckon, including the extra you get out of it (not much). Note I haven't used the 3 but I have used the original pc wired oculus, the quest and quest 2.
£275 sounds like a great price & the meta/quest platform is the clear winner out of all them when it comes to market share and software support.
The thing with VR though is I have found for most people its one of those things you use a lot when you first get it, love it & are wowed by it, but then the isolation, comfort (lack of) & hassle of having to wear the headset, over time means you will probably end up eventually just putting it in a cupboard. It won't get much use in the longer term compared to "normal" games platforms which keep on getting used. That's not really a problemthough if you approach it like that in the first place, kind of like Playstation eye toy, Kinect, Wii sports etc etc that came before it. Great fun during their time but not something you end up using forever.
Thanks Dave that's very helpful. What you say at the end is what I'm worrying about too; that it'll be a shiny and expensive toy that ends up living in a box under my bed. That said, I had a go on a friend's Quest 2 at the weekend, and there's no denying that I was wowed. I don't think the deal will last forever, so I'm quickly approaching 'flip a coin' territory
Yeah, I mean even if that happens, it's still something well worth experiencing and you will have a great time with it for that duration. I think things are a lot better on it than the last time I gave it a go as in there are some good games/experiences that have good longevity compared to the mostly novelty things it had a few years back.
I've heard a lot of good things about some golf simulator that people play leagues and tournaments on using a club with the controller fastened to it for example. Plus CEX will take it off your hands for £192 currently, so you could say it would only cost £83 if you end up shelving it after a while...
Now there's a thought... I was on the fence for £275, but for £83, that's nothing short of a bargain.
I’ve had the Quest 2 since RE4 VR came out (so three years now) and yeah, I use it LESS, but PCVR is where it’s at. The Quest library isn’t updated nearly enough if you JUST want to play onboard games
It's R.E. Village that I really want to play. I love the idea of horror games in VR. I had a go at Half Life: Alyx at the weekend, and that's what really piqued my interest.
P.S. You must be getting pretty excited about all these high-praise Nosferatu reviews!
I would love to play Village and RE4 remake in VR, but that’s exclusive to the PSVR2 unfortunately :/
There are mods for the PC versions of the games, but they don’t have the full motion control like the PS5 versions do with PSVR2.
Yup! Only thing is I wish they’d have made it in 2022 for a nice crisp 100 year anniversary after the original haha
Aha that would have been nice. I know, and sadly we've converted to a Xbox household, so I'll have to wait. I do love RE4 though
yeah sounds like a great purchase!
Cheers Makster, I'm sorely tempted!
Mine is mostly a dust collector. Kids are also not really interested in it. I use it for tests and some weird projects, but my 'hop-on' console is a docked Nintendo switch.
I’m genuinely still using a Quest 2 for PCVR games to perfectly acceptable enjoyment, so that and anything above in the Quest line will be dope. That is actually less than I initially paid for my Quest 2 at the same memory capacity
I was having the first PlayStation VR with the ps4 and was a wonderful buy
The new psvr2 was promising but for me disappointing for manny lost games and just a few new features
Because l’m just try psvr that’s is the only that l can recomend
That's a happy Braulio! :)
so I dusted off my old Oculus Quest 1 (pre meta rebrand), updated it to the last auto update they gave to it. Loads of stuff doesn't work on it anymore, presumably there are OS features, apis etc that a lot of games/apps/features need to call that don't work on the old OS/hardware now. Pretty useless headset now and may as well get rid of it.
However, the next day after reconnecting it, I got an email off meta with a unique url upgrade offer. If I bought the 3 or 3s they will give me a £80 credit, 3 months free quest+ sub & batman on top of their already reduced prices they have now. I'm tempted to get either one at quite a big effective price reduction when adding in this extra value (the extra 80 credit). It's annoying how useless they have made the original headset with the removal of support, but it's a nice gesture to send an upgrade offer over.
