The most emblematic lyric for me is Luiz Gonzaga's “Asa branca”. It reminds me of the hardships of drought and suffering in the Brazilian sertão. It also reminds me of the struggle and resistance of the people of the sertanejo against the hardships of the climate. In short, it's simply a work of art by our “King of Baião”.
When I heard the earth burning
Like a St. John's bonfire
I asked God in heaven, wow
Why such cruelty?
I asked God in heaven, wai
Why such cruelty?
What a brazier, what a forge
Not a foot of planting
I've lost my cattle for lack of water
My sorrel died of thirst
I lost my cattle because I had too much water
My sorrel died of thirst
Even the white wing
Flapped its wings from the sertão
Then I said goodbye, Rosinha
Keep my heart with you
Then I said: Goodbye, Rosinha
Keep my heart with you
Today, many miles away
In sad loneliness
I wait for the rain to fall again
For me to go back to my countryside
I wait for the rain to fall again
For me to come back to my countryside
When the green of your eyes
Spreads out in the meadow
I assure you, don't cry, you see
I'll come back, you see, my heart
I assure you, don't cry, don't cry
I'll come back, my heart
