Turn your café into a winter haven - and show us around!

in Critter Café

Closed

It hurt to do so, but I completely dismantled The Gothic Grind to make a winter haven... and then I put it right back AND with better furniture!

The video is below, but I recorded the whole process (making the haven, then upgrading The Gothic Grind) as a "fall asleep to" video. The final product of the haven is complete at 48:20 in the video.

Also included the images below. The proper guide/rationale for what makes it a haven is written below the Blue Sky post. I say all this in the video, but the written summary should save ya some time :)

When I think "Winter Haven" I don't think winter themed or winter colors, I think of a diner at 6,000 feet elevation that has been around since 1973. Hardly anything matches, the things that do match have various degrees of discoloration, and there is a clear mixing of home made and store bought peppered into the timeline.

The stuffing is poking out of some chairs, young people who have long since moved away are still remembered by the initials they carved into the surface of booth tables, all the faults you may find fade away in a truly cozy winter haven over time.

On my bottom level, there are mismatched tables and chairs serving function over fashion. The four seater table by the window has three chairs of the same color, one slightly off color to denote a different age, reupholstering or staining, and a fourth just completely different. The couch by the door is the classic "grandma" couch that is gaudy and lost its cushion's softness in the 80's. The carpet by the cash register and the door USED to be the same color, but from muddy, snowy boots, the one by the door has lost its luster.

The way I imagined it is that the upper area is the "critter party" rentable space, so it's somewhat more uniform, designed for large groups, but even still, the "wine auntie" corner (as I called it in the video) is a mix of different patterns, and one of the stools at the tables against the wall is also off color. They tried their hardest to make the furniture match, but the carpets and table cloths are still just a LITTLE different. The critter play area is made of a mix of handmade and store bought apparatuses.

Finally, on both levels, pictures. Every rural diner and cafe I've ever been to has dozens if not scores of pictures. There aren't VERY many different frame options in Critter Cafe, so I went sparingly, but ideally, every wall would be covered in frames and memorabilia of all sizes.

That's what I think of when I think winter haven. Janky, possibly even ugly, but home.

BOLD to open this moderation can of worms Ford James haha.

The first time I remember being all “oh… hellooooooo” was seeing Carla Gugino in Spy Kids. To paraphrase Rage Against the Machine, she’s a smooth operator operating correctly.

Sharp, good mom, battle ready, OBVIOUSLY very beautiful. Probably the reason I still have a thing for slicked back hair haha.

The crush has persisted as well.

First impressions: what do you make of Critter Cafe so far?

I am a horror hound through and through, so cozy games never really pinged on my radar. But there were SO many Rewards for Critter Cafe available I thought "I can definitely make back the money I spend buying it and if I don't end up liking it, no harm no foul."

Turns out, I really like it haha. I'm an animal lover and that definitely gives it an upper hand for me to like it. Also, I didn't think I'd care that much about the cafe customization, but I ended up having a GREAT time making what I call The Gothic Grind Cafe. I'm still a horror hound at heart.

I think the most pleasantly surprising thing is the puzzles. Survival horror has more than its fair share of pushing around boxes and lining up esoteric contraptions, and Critter Cafe really scratches that itch. I think the puzzles are its strongest quality. I'm glad there are so many because I'm going to be bummed when they run dry. Maaaaaybe additional critter DLC...?

Most of them present a genuine challenge and one in particular was like watching one of those "satisfying" YouTube videos of like, M&M's being poured down a slide or something lol (it's the one where you pre-line up a bunch of Wing Clip pads so you just leap frog through the whole puzzle.)

All in all, while I definitely wouldn't have got it without the Just About incentive, I'm glad I gave it a shot and I'm still enjoying myself/making videos for it even having submitted to all the Rewards I planned to. I just recorded another 90 mins tonight actually.

Also, Steam Deck verified is a BIG boon for me, so extra points!

P.S. Add a bald hair style, please. We don't all have hair like members of BTS you know XD

Café setup guide: share your tips for making a great cafeteria in Critter Café!

Before taking on the customer service challenge, I did a lot of testing on how to get the most seating with the least amount of getting accidentally blocked while trying to get to the customers. I landed on liking the smallest round tables with stools around on the lower level of the cafe for quick XP grinding early in the game.

After a while when I had gotten the hang of quickly getting and fulfilling orders on the lower level, I moved to the upper level with some sofas in an L shape and four comfy chairs in a reading nook. Adding that extra bit of navigation on top of the dialed in lower area muscle memory wasn't too much of a feat!

As far as design goes, don't fret if you feel like there isn't anything very "you" when first starting out. As you run the cafe shifts and do critter parties, you unlock more furniture, decorations and wallpapers/flooring! What I would suggest is before you go full tilt on a certain aesthetic or design, grind out some levels and check out your new inventory to spark design ideas.

Ultimately, there is no currency aspect of the game, so you can place anything in your inventory as much as you want. Creativity and taste is all on you!

I went very gothic with black/red colorways :)
