I think values are important. It's one thing to enjoy a game but it gives something extra if you know that the people who made that game are treated fairly, have good work conditions and the company cares about the environment for example.

I never cared much about hype either, I just play the games I enjoy let them be new or older ones, and only buy a new console or upgrade my PC if it's really necessary for a new game.

With all the mass layoffs last year there are a few companies who stood out by not doing it. Square Enix was one of them. They had a restructure this year which might have been inevitable, who knows, hopefully it will work out for them and they can set expectations they can actually meet. While I think they made some mistakes with some recent Final Fantasy games they still have my respect for how quality games they produce, I always got the quality worth my money and what I expect from their games, and for how I was treated as a customer when I had to turn to them for sorting out some issues.

I don't have much experience with Nintendo, but the values you mention are good ones and something what I would like to see from more companies.

I know the playoffs have been terrible! Really hope that ends soon but I worry with AI that it may not be the end of it! Really good points there ! Good to see SE looking after their employees

I think Nintendo are a trash company - who are hellbent on wanting to produce rubbish hardware that they then have the audacity to charge premium prices for.

And if you try to engage with that company's fans, you'll soon realize that they have no capacity for critical thought, and that they tend to believe everything that is spoon-fed to them via the media.

I grew up with Nintendo hardware and they had some of the best games around, so you could say I'm somewhat of a fan, they did try to innovate with their handheld systems. I also think their games overall generally release in a better quality than most. I also like how they treat their employees, instead of laying them off the executives take cuts first. But by no means are Nintendo squeaky clean, they've engaged in extremely questionable behaviour that's less than consumer friendly.

That said, I do think their current hardware is a little dated and they haven't done anything innovative in a long time, both hardware and games wise. The cutesie look of many of the games is definitely getting a bit tiring. I's somethingt that's always put me off buying a switch. Do I really want one just for Zelda? They y need something fresh and exciting to liven things up. It's not fair to generalise like you did.

Values are definitely important, but I think the majority of companies care more about profit than about core values. Like Sony charging $700 for a PS5 pro and upping the price of OLD games, or Xbox buying everything in sight but barely giving the studios they do buy the chance to shine due to the game pass model.

I mean companies only remain companies if they make a profit on their goods..

I think we're both mature enough to understand that there's a limit to the level of nickel and diming that customers will and should put up with. Such as Ubisofts pricing model, charging $70 - $120 for regurgitated slop that's buggy and poorly optimised at launch at best. Or numerous other companies over reliance on egregious micro transactions and season/battle pass models. Or charging for poor quality content that adds little to no value to the game, to pick an example $7 for a single Starfield mission that wasn't very good?

As I said, there's limits on what companies can and should get away with and that's where the beauty of the 'free market' comes in, we decide. And I believe they're starting to realise the hard way that they've reached those limits in many areas. Which is why having strong moral values, is just as important as being profitable if you want to remain successful over a longer term.

which game companies have strong moral values?

Makster's avatar

I wouldn't go that far.

Hard to say that it's a 'premium' price when its the cheapest console this generation..

It's a trash console... And it's £300 for 10 year old tech.

Makster's avatar

It's £209.00 and a console is more than just the tech inside..

It's hard to say what the values of Nintendo are?

If they're about releasing physical products: the big three don't really have much say on whether a release is digital only as that is a publisher decision.
Denouncing AI as a tool is also not progressive thinking. Computer animation was also once seen as 'lazy' compared to traditional animation, so much so that the original Tron was disqualified from being nominated at the Academy Awards.

They're also just as bad with producing enough stock or taking steps to combat scalpers. Many of their consoles were sold out on release + beyond (the lower price point making it less of a barrier), and they don't compensate flaws in their current accessory (Switch Drift).

I think considering Nintendo a company with good values is a terrible mistake. It's hard to have good values in any big game company within the capitalist system. The Nintendo is against mass firing that is really a good thing, but at the same time the workers have to do overtime, the famous crunch. And others bad things about Nintendo is how they treat the community, they release the same game, of decades ago, with no improvement with high prices. They refuse to make localisation for other languages and many more disrespectful things!

When a company have good values they gain admiration and respect from its customers or users. Eventually some companies simply lose those values and therefore the respect they gained.

There are developers and gamecompanies i used to admire like Bungie, Activision Blizzard, Electronic Arts, Sony, etc. In time they lost those values.

...values that takes forever to recover again.

Nintendo has been a benchmark in the market for being very original since the beginning of the company. But the high prices keep me away from really joining the community, and as I live in another country the price is even higher given the proportions. I think there could be a middle ground, of how far you're protecting your ideas and how far you're working for the community. That's why I think this behavior is wrong, but they're not going to change it, since they already have a fan base!
