"Battle of the Formats: Paper, Pixels, or Audio?"

Bounty Description: In the diverse world of books and comics, everyone has a preferred format - whether it's the classic feel of paper, the convenience of electronic books, or the immersive experience of audiobooks. We're challenging the Just About Books & Comics community to creatively express their favorite reading format and explain why it resonates with them.

P.S. Pixels could be regular screens or e-ink.

Cosplaying as a comic book character would be a fun one, photo or video form

What was your favourite book as a child and why?

There's been great suggestions already!

Here are my submissions:

Tell us your ideal reading environment - e.g. what does it look like, sound like, busy cafe, or quiet park, inside/outdoors, etc.

Share your favourite bookstore - what makes you keep going back!

What string-of-sentences (or phrase) is memorable to you, and why.

Grab the nearest book, open to page 32, share a sentence that has the most meaning and why do you find it meaningful? (e.g. "the trees wept as the rain ended" - it's meaningful to me because rains aren't coming back for years and climate change stuff)

Introduce us to your library - what interesting perks does it have, what were you surprised by, what event did you attend there recently?

What do you consider to be the best animal to star in a junior's book.

Happy reading :)

Best Reverse Adaption (Movie to Book)

I remember buying the Jurassic Park 3 book to complete my collection (even though Michael Crichton obviously didn’t write it). The book is based on the movie and while it mostly followed the plot exactly, there were some interesting additions because it was based on the screenplay, so it actually had more and different parts than the film.

I’m not sure how prevalent this is in traditional literature, but I know there are TONS of comics which do retellings of films, so all books and comics would be on the table in this Bounty.

Back when I was growing up - the amount of kids movies that became novelised was insane. In the middle you'd have screenshots of the movie with a short description of what was happening. I can't see there being a market for it now that accessing the movie didn't require owning the movie on VHS, renting it, catching it on TV or in the cinema again

Horror and Cats's avatar

Hopefully then run this bounty because I’m curious about some examples haha

Which Underated comic Book character in your opinion Deserves a Solo Run and why ? What would make them worth a full solo run ?

Makster's avatar

ngl it'd be Catman. Gail Simone rewrote this sorta silly Z-list tier villain of Batman into a kinda badass Wolverine type during her run of the Secret Six. It's one of my favorite DC series which has since been forgotten by the publisher.

Kings Court's avatar

yeh there are quite a few characters that get made to sit in the background or as supports and then get forgotten and discarded sadly !

What is a book you love but would never recommend?

Name a book you wish you could change the ending of and what you would change.

Makster's avatar

For the first one it'd be A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara - such a tragic book about 4 male friends. My sister got it for me purely based on the author's name since I really like Haruki Murakami but this is nothing like a Murakami.

I would probably say using some deep thought questions would be useful

If could you only read one book or comic for the rest of your life what would it be and why?

If you could live in the world of any book you have read, which world would it be?

Which character from a book or comic that you have read would you love to be able to meet in real life?

Makster's avatar

Regarding the last question - if you read an autobiography of someone still living you would actually be able to meet them in real life!

  • When was the last time you used the public library - and how do you feel about them introducing multimedia that can be borrowed such as CDs, films, or even video games?

  • Which comic book had an amazing cover but disappointing art/ story inside?

  • Which book did you struggle with reading the first time but on second read, found it a lot more enjoyable?

  • Characters in fiction that the author tried to make unlikeable, but are actually really cool?

  • Do you prefer comics with bad writing but amazing art, or bad art but amazing story?

  • What series has unresolved stories/plots that frustrates you to this day?

  • Do you want to know the author's intent or do you like coming up with your own conclusion when it comes to major themes of a story?

Summerise a book or graphic novel story backwards.

A quick example would be Moby Dick.

Captain Ahab and his crew were at deaths door after a whale destroyed his ship. Said whale then saved the lives of all sailors allowing them to rebuild. Ahab became obsessed with the whale, named moby-dick, however with the support of his crew slowly detached himself (and refitted his leg i guess 🤷🏼‍♂️). One of the newer crew Ishmael is inspired by this act of comradery and manages to overcome his own depression and head back to his life on land.

Not the best example 😅

PLAN/MAKE A TRAILER

Choosing a book or comic that has not been adapted to screens, plan out a trailer for the book as if it was coming out. For written submissions, be sure to include the actors chosen and a description of what happens in the trailer. Feel free to include images or splice together a video for your trailer, provided it follows [link to media sharing/copyright] rules of the site.

Best books/comics with unique twists you didn't see coming

Books/Comics that are made better by fanfiction

It's easy to find examples of fanfiction that's really bad, but what books have really amazing fanfiction written and what are those fanfics about? In the event of non-canon compliant fanfic pieces, why are they still a good addition to the fandom?

AirGaram's avatar

Did this book remind you of any other books that you've read? Describe the connection.

Would you have given the book a different title? If yes, what would your title be?

L
  1. What world or concept would you create or would like to see in a new comic?

  2. What original protaganist or antagonist would you create or like to see in a new comic?

  3. What are the worst story tropes you see in comics?

These question would yield some cool concepts and would lay the groundwork for a new comic story, perhaps even being able to then maybe create a community original comic with pooled ideas.

Write an extra paragraph of your favourite book or comic.

I can think of a few off the top of my head:

What book made you fall in love with reading?

Mixed Media- Compare a book to screen adaptation or screen to book.. That age old saying "The book is better", is it always true? Can you think of an example where you preferred the movie?

What is your favorite book genre and why?

The "turn to page ___ and tell us the first line" of your current book read is always a fun little thing to do!

Top 10 Classics

Do you keep a reading journal and if so, what do you record in it?

How do you rate your reads? Do you have a 5 star system? What different elements of a book do you consider when rating it as a whole?

Alphabet Challenge- Name a book title for each letter of the alphabet!

I could go on and on, but I'll stop for now I swear lol

Wait wait.. I have another one... Favorite book quote!

Ok, now I'm done.

Nope- One more. I've seen a fun thing on social media where you stack books do that the titles on the spines make a poem of sorts. It's pretty fun and a good way to incorporate some pictures!

Name a famous all around quote from a books which reappeared in Movies, Games and Comics.

For Example from Faust <3

Mit des Pudels Kern - With the poodle's core

https://www.poetryintranslation.com/PITBR/German/Fausthome.php

I am very sure i have heard this in the one or other movie, but quick search on google didn´t had the result i wanted.

Boomer's avatar

Hey Kane Carnifex, I put the phrase through a translator and it replied with "The core of the poodle".

Maybe this will return the results you wanted?

Kane Carnifex's avatar

Thanks, but since i already failed to find it in German, i will give the english a try. We need a Website where the movies fully transcripted :P

ahhh CHATGPT.. xD nice!!!!

There is still huge impact from oldschool Books on mondern Movies.

"Shutter Island" (2010) Dr. Jeremiah quotes a passage from "Faust"

"Mephisto" (1981) "Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari" (1920)

Don´t know this.

There are so many great submissions!

One I would love to see is Have you met your favourite author? Who is it and what did you talk about? Which of their works did you get signed (if any)?

Or if you didn't have a chance yet, then which author would you like to meet and what would you talk about with them? Which of their works would you get signed? And for a twist we can also throw in here people who are sadly not with us anymore, so go wild and maybe meet one of the ancient Greek authors?

You won’t be short of ideas here, Rich! 😅 One I think would be good though is, ‘tell us about your favourite opening line of a book’. There are so many iconic lines in literature.

Horror and Cats's avatar

Oh that's a good one. So many books open with wild nonsense or overly dramatic hyperbole

I know, it's overwhelming! Such an awesome response. We'll have to post more rewards next time...

I would go for -

"Use AI to create your own fantasy comic book cover and provide a brief synopsis"

TheGreatestBanana12's avatar

If you could make your own on book/comic what would the story be about or what would the genre/theme be?

Name a book that you can read over and over again and tell us why

Make a 3 panel comic about (insert topic)

Write the opening chapter to a story
