In a living room, on a nice comfortable armchair. It's evening and it's snowing outside, the wind is blowing hard, but in the warmth of the large living room, warmed by the large lit fireplace, you feel like you're out of time. Wooden beams come out of the walls and the large soft carpet at the foot of the armchair fills all the floor and is lit only by the fire in the fireplace and a few candles scattered around the room. In the air you can smell the sweet scent of chocolate coming from my favorite cup, from where a little smoke rises into the air. On the little coffee table where the cup is placed there is a book that I would really like to read right now. and it's the only one I would like to read right now, especially in this situation...

On the Book is written Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

I can't understand why this book inspires me so much Christmas, only the first of the Harry Potter saga has this effect on me, maybe because I associate it with a magic that suddenly falls into the life of the protagonist, like when during the year, from the days that are normal, approaching Christmas they transform into magical days regardless of what you do. Maybe because there is the exchange of gifts between Harry's friends, maybe also having associated the book with the music of the film that has among the orchestral instruments, bells and a succession of notes and chords that recall some traditional Christmas songs.. I really couldn't really explain the reason, but here, in the story, there are many references that inevitably lead me to think that. The Philosopher's Stone is the only book that I would like to read again and again during the Christmas period and also the only one that immediately comes to mind when I think of this Magical period.

My book for cold winter days, is The Ice Princess by Camilla Lackberg.

A 2002 mystery novel that inspired Jonas Grimas' 2007 movie. One of the theme presented in the novel is the difficult relationship between parents and children. The harsh winter climate, more than any other time of the year, reminds me of my passion for reading detective novels. On the one hand, the holidays give me warmth, but the cold reminds me of the dark atmospheres found in these mysterious stories.

Its got to be The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S Lewis.

If there's one book that can capture the spirit of winter with utmost perfection, that would be it. Entering this snowy world of Narnia, ruled by the eternal winter of the White Witch, is quite the greatest escape into the frosty magical land. I just have to watch the film adaptation each time I read it, it's just tradition now!

I will say it, as a child, I was wildly jealous of Edmund's Turkish delight, it looked so good in the movie, that I remember asking my parents for some, which, let's face it, didn't quite live up to the magic of Narnia. And then, of course, there is Lucy's steaming cup of hot chocolate courtesy of Mr. Tumnus. So warm and comforting is this scene that, every time I make myself a cup during winter, it still comes into my mind.

This book even inspired my love of coats, seriously! Lucy's little fur coat and the Pevensies' winter attire had me dreaming of snowy adventures in chic outerwear. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is more than just a book; it's a wintry experience that makes you crave magic, hot drinks, and fabulous winter fashion. For me, it's the perfect read to curl up with on a cold night.

I will admit, I did read the book for the first time after watching the film so the book cover of the one I had as a kid is the movie poster haha

1)"A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens

A timeless classic that embodies the Christmas spirit. The transformation of Ebenezer Scrooge through the journey with the three spirits is a perfect read to find warmth, generosity and magic during the holidays.

2)"The Bear and the Nightingale" by Katherine Arden

A tale immersed in snowy medieval Russia, where folklore mixes with reality. A brave heroine faces magical creatures and ancient spirits in a story that evokes the charm and mystery of winter.

3)"Batman: The Long Halloween" by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale

Even if it is not strictly Christmas, this noir comic with a dark and winter atmosphere is a gripping read for cold evenings. A mystery story that accompanies Batman on a hunt for a serial killer during the holidays.

4)"Blankets" by Craig Thompson

A graphic autobiography that explores love, family and personal growth, with illustrations that perfectly evoke the cold of winter and the warmth of memories. Perfect for those looking for an emotional and thoughtful read.

Agatha Christie's Tragic Christmas

If you like enigmas and investigation at Christmas time, I recommend this book. I really liked it because of its story.

The whole story develops around a murder at Christmas time, the murdered man is Mr. Lee, and the detective called to solve the case is Detective Hercule Poirot, it is an interesting story which should be given a chance.

Half Life 2: Raising the Bar
I've always associated Valve's flag ship series with winter. Partly due to getting The Orange Box for a winter 17th birthday on PC and binging all the games during winter holiday.

Recently Half Life 2 passed 20 years and now is as good a time to look back on this legendary game. I love everything about this game, the science, the history, the art direction and narrative it tells. This book is now something of legend as you can't pick it up shy of triple figures but fortunately you can find a PDF of it floating around on the internet.

A recommended winter read with a lot of humor.

Bizarre, lovable characters, dry humor and insults in the Bavarian dialect: welcome to Niederkaltenkirchen! Here, the provincial police officer Franz Eberhofer investigates strange (murder) cases together with his detective buddy Rudi Birkenberger and often makes one faux pas after the next.

The "Eberhofer crime novels" are the work of the German bestselling author Rita Falk, originated as novels and have made it to the big screen.

"Brian's Winter" by Gary Paulsen is a young adult novel and serves as an alternate ending to Paulsen's earlier book, "Hatchet." In this story, Brian Robeson, a 13-year-old boy, is not rescued at the end of summer but must instead survive the harsh Canadian winter alone. The narrative explores Brian's adaptations to the cold environment, detailing his struggles with food scarcity, shelter, and clothing, as well as his encounters with wildlife like a bear. The book emphasizes themes of survival, self-reliance, and the harsh realities of nature, showcasing Brian's ingenuity and resilience.

ICE CREAM MAN! A deep series to brew over, and lots of scares to keep you thinking about the fragility of life. I find myself re-reading these books over and over again.

Around the winter season, I often reread Neil Gaiman’s Norse Mythology whether it's the original novel, the graphic novels, or the audiobook. This is a collection/retelling of classic stories from Norse Mythology starting from the origin of the Norse gods to the final battle and aftermath of Ragnarok, which perfectly enhances the vibe of a Nordic winter.

My winter read is ironically, New Spring by Robert Jordan.

Despite the title I tend to read it around this time of year (sometimes but not always followed by the rest of the Wheel of Time series), because the first third or so of it takes place in winter and because it ends on a message of encouragement and a bit of hope that I've always found bolstering during the darker and colder days of the year.

Whether you're looking for something short and breezy (clocking in at roughly half the size of even the shortest books from the main series) with good fantasy vibes and strong characters, or you're using it as a springboard into the full 14 book Wheel of TIme series, it's a book I highly recommend you slot into your reading calendar.

Alternatively, you can check it out in graphic novel form with art duties taken up by Harvey Tolibao and Mike Miller, who you may know from their work on Green Arrow and Injustice respectively.

Happy! by Grant Morrison is a wild and unique holiday read.

It combines dark crime drama with a magical holiday spirit, following a cynical, very well dressed (not), ex-cop who teams up with a tiny, blue, flying unicorn (I’m not lying)to save a kidnapped child. Its mix of gritty storytelling and whimsical humor makes it both thrilling and strangely heartwarming.

If you like unusual stories with unexpected twists and a touch of holiday magic, Happy! is a short, fun ride. It’s perfect for readers who enjoy edgy tales with a surprising dose of hope (it even has a pretty good live action series).

The Ancient Future Trilogy, The Celestial Triad and the Triad of Being Trilogy by Traci Harding. These 3 trilogy's follow on from one another, with exception that the Triad of Being Trilogy is set further along in the timeline than the other two. These books aren't a quick read so they are perfect for a cold winter day/night in front of the fire or rugged up on the sofa. You will get so invested in the books you won't want to put them down so I recommend buying all the books in one of the trilogy's at a time so you don't have to wait.

Well, what about a little of ancient philosophy for winter months, last year a good friend lent me this precious book and without hesitation i would recommend it, specially during the cold months where is quite easy to feel uninspired and stuck, if you're looking for a book that can challenge, inspire and instill a mindset transformation, definitely worth considering.

Planning to buy mine before chrismas 😊

If you're looking for a comic book that combines emotional depth, stunning artwork, and a touch of magical realism, I Kill Giants by Joe Kelly and J.M. Ken Niimura is an absolute must-read.

The story follows Barbara Thorson, a brave and imaginative young girl who fights "giants" while navigating the challenges of her real life. What starts as a whimsical tale of monster hunting transforms into a deeply moving exploration of grief, resilience, and the power of imagination.

No matter how many times I read it, I Kill Giants never fails to make me cry. The raw emotion in Joe Kelly’s writing, paired with Niimura’s expressive black-and-white artwork, craetes a story that feels both intimate and universal. It’s not just about battling literal giants—it’s about facing the metaphorical ones we all encounter. And if that wasn’t enough, there’s also a film adaptation that stays wonderfully faithfull to the original, bringing Barbara’s world to life in a way that fans of the graphic novel will adore.

Whether you love coming-of-age stories, fantasy, or heartfelt narratives, I Kill Giants is a gem that will stay with you long after the final page.

Andrew Burnet's 50 Speeches That Made the Modern World is the ideal winter read as the year comes to an end and the chill prompts introspection.

A motivational method to close out the year with a sense of purpose and optimism is to immerse yourself in the thoughts of great leaders such as Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela.

Patrulla Espacial - Space Patrol (1983) / Julius Goodman & Ralph Reese / [1986]

When I was 8 years old I remember my grandparents gave me a couple of ‘Choose your Own Adventure’ books for Christmas and, honestly, at first I didn't know what to expect until I understood that it wasn't a normal book, but one in which my decisions affected the course of the story. That fascinated me so much that it undoubtedly marked my later love of role-playing games. I remember these winter nights in my bed, covered with several blankets, and reading this book over and over again trying to reach the best ending... or, at least, one where I didn't die disintegrated...

Crónicas Marcianas - The Martian Chronicles (1950) Ray Bradbury / [1990]

This book was ‘given’ to me by my father on Christmas 1990... and while it wasn't a store-bought gift, it was even more special to me because it was given to him by my mother in 1975. He kept insisting that I read it because, being a collection of short stories, it was a very enjoyable read. This book undoubtedly reminds me of that Christmas, and I will never forget the look of joy on my father's face when, after I finished reading the book (I devoured it completely), I told him I wanted more of the same kind...

The year he was no longer with us, I decided to keep this beautiful memory and read this book to myself every Christmas, and I am doing so.

El Hobbit - The Hobbit (1937) J.R.R. Tolkien / [1992]

This book is special because it was the first book I bought myself; with some money I had saved I decided to buy this book without knowing Tolkien, nor The Lord of the Rings, nor having ever read a medieval fantasy book... I just saw it and was struck by its prologue. Besides, the fact that its first page had a map drawn on it caught me completely because I associated it directly to an adventure... and it certainly was one.

Amstrad Eterno (2018) Atila Merino / [2024]

And this book is the one I'm going to devour this Christmas, hehehehe. I just bought it, and although it's not a usual reading, I'm going to go back to my childhood remembering my beloved Amstrad CPC 464 that I enjoyed so many winters, summers, autumns and springs.

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" by C.S. Lewis a.k.a. Narnia

Narnia is a fantastic winter read, It's like a Christmas in a bottle - captures the magic and wonder of the season. The snowy landscapes feel festive and cozy, and the story is about hope, bravery, and kindness - values we associate with the holidays. Plus, it's a tale of adventure and family. It's like stepping into a winter wonderland full of charm and inspiration, perfect for Christmas vibes!

My recommendation here: watch the movie and then, read the book. You will get a much richer perspective on small details with great visual support directed by Andrew Adamson

From a kids rises with ninja turtles toys under christmas tree, how better idea reading a celebration about them? TMNT are always in my heart and if you know this feel just go buy this. This volume contains a version of Ninja Turtles where violence is more tolerated and draws are very rude. You're gonna like it!

The Bible is the sacred book for millions of people, containing spiritual, moral, and historical teachings. During the Christmas season, its passages about the birth of Jesus offer hope, peace, and reflection. It is a source of inspiration, comfort, and guidance in every season of the year.

The perfect book for this Christmas season is Kathryn Lasky's Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole. The story carries readers to an incredible realm full of courageous, sociable, and adventurous owl characters. The main attraction of this novel is its intriguing and mysterious story, which has the reader wondering what will happen next.
Lasky deftly depicts an owl world full of conflict and custom, hence creating a compelling and fascinating setting. Moreover, modern and inspiring themes that transmit a strong moral message include courage, responsibility, and the fight against evil.
This book is perfect for the holidays as it offers a deep emotional excursion along with enjoyment. Thanks to its action-packed story, adventure and fantasy readers will find Legend of the Guardians to be a vivid and energizing read. It's the perfect way to escape to a world of wonder and courage when the cold makes cuddling up with a great book a luxury.

"The Day It Stopped Snowing in Alaska" is a novel that brightens any winter day. With the masterful pen of Alice Kellen, the reader is immersed in a world that, although entirely real, manages to convey the magic of two souls united by destiny, as opposite as water and fire… or at least, that's what it seems at first. It’s an absorbing read from start to finish, hard to put down until the last page.

Kellen creates characters with a captivating depth, weaving them into a narrative full of unexpected twists. Each page draws you deeper into a unique yet deeply human world. The cold, icy landscapes of Alaska serve as the perfect backdrop for a story that balances vulnerability and strength, bringing to life the raw emotions of two people who, despite their differences, can’t help but feel irresistibly drawn to one another.

Their journey is filled with tension, heartwarming discoveries, and a serene beauty that only love can bring. Kellen's writing feels like a soft, comforting hug—never overwhelming, but always leaving a sense of hope and belonging.

By the time you reach the end, you’ll have not only fallen in love with the characters but also with the calm, enchanting world they inhabit. "The Day It Stopped Snowing in Alaska" goes beyond a typical love story, reminding us that life can surprise us when we least expect it, and that love, in all its forms, can melt even the coldest of hearts.

Personally I would opt for themed books and comics, however in a completely exceptional way I recommend the comic Blue in the land of dreams, there are three volumes if I remember correctly, and it is rather dark and engaging. As a book however, despite being old, I recommend The Old Man and the Sea, perhaps because among the books I have read it is the one that struck me the most.

Ah, winter reading! There’s nothing better than curling up with a blanket, a hot cup of tea, and a great book or comic during the holiday season. Here are some recommendations to keep you company during this magical time:

  1. "The Song of Achilles" by Madeline Miller
A poetic and heart-wrenching retelling of the story of Achilles and Patroclus. Perfect for those who love mythology and intense stories that warm (or break) your heart.

  2. "Before the Coffee Gets Cold" by Toshikazu Kawaguchi
Set in a small Japanese café, this gentle novel makes you reflect on the value of time and relationships. A touch of magic to warm the soul.

  3. "Gideon Falls" by Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino
A horror-thriller comic that will keep you on the edge of your seat. With haunting artwork and gripping storytelling, it’s perfect for a more intense winter evening.

  4. "Mickey Mouse Christmas Edition"
For a bit of festive fun, why not? A collection of classic Mickey Mouse holiday stories is always a delightful choice for both kids and adults.

Whether you’re looking for intense emotions, epic adventures, or just a touch of magic for the holidays, I hope these recommendations fit the bill. Happy reading!
