It's one thing to start creating content, but it's another to take the step towards being a content creator. Producing professional-looking, slick, edited content, whether you're doing videos, streams, or something else entirely, and doing it with the consistency needed to turn it into a job, is vastly different to just recording one take and clicking publish.
While there’s no substitute for your own experience, you can skip a few steps of trial and error by listening to the advice of the people who have been there and done that. So we asked the JACC community to send us the most helpful tutorial content you’ve found - the guidance you followed that helped you at the very start of your journey. You recommended three different video guides, each focussing on different aspects of running a channel or stream. It’s a fantastic starter pack for new creators, so read on and enjoy!
How to stream with OBS
First up is FUN INC, who has submitted a guide to streaming with OBS - Open Broadcasting Software, for those in the dark - from Hammer Dance. OBS is widely considered to be the most popular streaming software thanks to how vast its capabilities are, but also how accessible it is once you get past the initial hurdle of understanding its various settings. That's what Hammer Dance's video does, and then some.
How to edit with Premiere Pro
Next up is another software tutorial covering a different, but no less critical, aspect of making video content. Our thanks to Lanah Tyra who’s shared Vince Opra’s guide to editing videos with Premiere Pro. Much like OBS for streaming, Premiere Pro is the video editing software most content creators use - gone are the days of Sony Vegas being the top choice. Lanah explained this video was especially helpful for her when she "was getting back into editing and needed a quick reminder on what had changed" since she last had a go.
How to follow the 3H content plan
Finally, MURRRAAAAY has a bite-sized video from Roberto Blake on content strategy, or in other words, what should you make, and for what purpose? If you want to grow, it’s good to have some kind of plan for this rather than just uploading random thoughts, and Blake recommends the 3H content plan. What is that, I hear you ask? It stands for Hero, Hub, and Help. Hero content is meant to be your best-produced, flagship content, focussing on inflection point moments like a new game launch or event. Hub content is the regular programming your subscribers will come to know and love, such as longer series and podcasts. Meanwhile, Help content is all about guides; how-to videos, tutorials, and tips. Check out Roberto's full video below for an explainer on how you can adapt these ideas to your specific channel and brand.
