My top tips as someone who have been very fortunate to go for work:
Public transport is great - don't worry about trying to stay too close to the convention centre because, as the Tiger King would say, "I'm never going to financially recover from this"
Those shoes better be comfortable - you might think you know the comfiest brand on earth but don't even think about wearing new ones!
Don't eat at the convention centre if you don't need to (refer back to point 1's reasoning)
Go eat some Schweinshaxe (AKA pork knuckle) - its delicious!
It was easy to get a pass of some sort for Gamescom a few years ago, but the organisers have really gotten quite stringent in terms of their requirements as of recently.
Make sure that you meet the necessary credentials, otherwise make sure that you write a really good cover letter that puts you in a really good light. You could also bolster your cover letter and application by linking to some of your more prestigious work, as well as referring to any publications that might have cited you in the past. Basically, you need to come across as someone who is capable of doing really work and to a high calibre.
With regards to Cologne / Gamescom itself...
1) Make sure that you book your accommodation as soon as possible. Seriously.
2) Cologne is a really beautiful city, and has some amazing weather. Depending on how far you stay from the convention centre, you could just walk it to and back from the centre on all days. Although understand this: the days are very long, and depending on your fitness levels, very tiring.
3) Take some good quality business cards with you. As well as a notebook and pen. And a watch.
4) The convention centre is massive. Expect to get lost in it on numerous occasions.
Thanks for this <3
