Most of us have all started making content as a hobby and if our content got monetised it was due to revenue from platforms where we don't really have a control over the rates of payment. But if you start doing freelance work like editing or writing and they ask you how much do you charge for it, how do you set a realistic rate for your skills/time?
If it would come to editing, my only starting point would be how much my job pays per hour, because if I ever wanted content creation to be my full-time job, probably that's the approximate I would like to get at least. But then I would have no idea if that is realistic for a beginner(?) am I over- or undercharging?
As for writing... I have absolutely no idea how much should I charge per word... When I write my Final Fantasy Friday articles I just sit down and write, sometimes it just flows and I'm done quickly, sometimes it is more digging information, finding the supporting media etc, so I can't even start by how long it takes to write 1000 words for example and go by that, because it will depend on the nature of the article.
So if anyone has any advise how to get started with pricing your services, it would be much appreciated. I'm asking because there is an opportunity to write scripts for Final Fantasy videos on one of the major sites and even though my encyclopaedia knowledge is not for the main games they want to cover but the "it would be a bonus" FFXIV, I'm thinking to apply for it, even just to put my name out there that in the FF creators community.
