To whet your appetites, here are a couple of gameplay previews of Dragon’s Dogma 2, one by Eurogamer’s Ian Higton, also known as our friend Platform32, and one by VG247.
Ian’s conclusion is that it feels similar to the original - some jank, but a ton of charm and chaotic gameplay in a much bigger, seamless world. That lines up with what director Hideaki Itsuno has promised - a deeper and more polished revisitation of a familiar story, set in a bigger “parallel” version of the original world.
VG247 broadly agrees with that point, saying that the original game was too far ahead of its time to do justice to its big ideas, and that the sequel is essentially trying to do just that. That explains the same feeling of familiarity, but VG's Alex Donaldson is giddy about what doing justice to the original's vision could mean:
How does that sound to you? Were you hoping for a more radical departure from the original or are you up for this?"I really do think the market has caught up with the pace, tone, and style of Dragon’s Dogma. The world is ready for another one of these games - and it feels like this might be exactly the right game at exactly the right moment. Could it be an all-timer? Could it be a masterwork for all?"
What do you reckon about these assessments? Were you hoping for a more radical departure from the original, or does 'similar, but bigger, better, and done properly' sound like exactly what you want?
