So let's start with the obvious

Firefly, no explanation needed, if you're into sci-fi, you know

The second one,

Shadow & Bone - This show was going places and a dispute on pay was the wrong way to go about it. It was a great show, with great writing and the actors were fantastic for the job.

Third One,

Warrior Nun - This show had an amazing build and as soon as it started to get interesting, boom Netflix canceled it, no reason given. Was a great show.

Fourth One,

The Umbrella Academy, after the "footloose" episode, seemed to lose its audience and I don't know why, it was great with great actors, and the storyline was so messed up it was epic.

The fifth and final one,

The Last Kingdom, the show was an amazing tale, it had real traction and they simply canceled it for no reason, its audience retention was high, it was in the papers, and Viking slaughter is always fun no?

So...

Yeh, I have a long list of shows I'd like to see come back, people need to stop cancelling them!

Oh what I only read Firefly and was like YES but now you've blown my mind.

Shadow and Bone's cancelled?!?

Umbrella Academy's coming back for one last season, no?

I had thought TLK went to completion, but it wouldn't have done had it not been for the Netflix show. I was a big fan of the books but never got on with the series.

According to sources the TUA is still "maybe" and SAB got cancelled which sucked, but they do renew stuff so I have my fingers crossed

I was also under the impression that we weren't get any more Umbrella Academy, so I'll happily take a 'maybe'!

Did you watch the last season of The Last Kingdom? We enjoyed the first three (?) but got put off. Always wondered if it was worth finishing!

I've only read the books, but they're great (somewhat trashy) reads.

Well researched (Bernard Cornwell always is), but pretty formulaic seemingly unkillable stoic hero with a loyal follower that's always just one step away from realising his (always his) goals. I lap it up, for better or worse.

I'm not even going to start on Firefly because I could write an essay. I adore it!

One word - Firefly. If I could resurrect any canceled TV show, without a doubt, it would be 'Firefly.' Seriously, I've yet to meet anyone who's seen the series and doesn't understand why it deserves a comeback.

The magic of 'Firefly' lies in its unique blend of genres – it's a space western with elements of drama, humor, and sci-fi. And the balance between them it perfect. The show had this incredible ability to make you laugh one moment and tear up the next.

Moreover, 'Firefly' was cut short in its prime, leaving numerous storylines unfinished and character arcs unresolved. There was so much potential for growth and exploration within its universe.

I consider 'Firefly' as a 'mystery project,' given the enduring intrigue and discussion surrounding its cancellation, even two decades later (just look at us). Despite its brief initial run, the show garnered a huge fan base, critical acclaim, and great acceptance, which contributes to its mystique. The circumstances of its cancellation – ranging from scheduling conflicts and episode misordering to creative differences with the network – have fueled continuous speculation and wonder.

This one goes back all the way to 2009 - Lie To Me.

It only ran for 3 seasons, but I enjoyed every single episode. It really made me appreciate Tim Roth. It was an intriguing concept and I always thought that a show about body language, expressions, and facial expressions required more acting skill than others.

You still needed good scripts for the episodes of course, but everyone did such a good job in this TV show that I felt very disappointed when it got cancelled even though the acting seemed better than in many other shows.

When it got cancelled, I slowly started making my way through Tim Roth's Filmography and discovered a few more gems.

I LOVED Lie To Me - Tim Roth was brilliant! The relationship between him and his daughter was so great, I was so ready to follow the relationship development between him and Gillian - such. shame that it was cancelled.

Special Unit 2, a two season series which aired in the very early 2000's, saw Alexondra Lee and Michael Landes as detectives assigned to the titular task force. Det. Kate Benson and Nick O'Malley are assigned with defending the good people of Chicago Illinois from "Links"--missing links in the chain which lead to the winner of the evolutionary arms race, humanity.

Spider people, werewolves, djinn, gargoyles, all manner of humanoid (and non-humanoid but shh... spoilers, darling) creature except one: vampires. What a ridiculous notion, as pointed out by SU2 commanding officer Richard Page. Why do these Links love Chicago so much? No one knows, but they sure do love it and it's up to SU2 to keep them in check.

It is exactly as goofy as it sounds and possibly more so if you aren't familiar with low-rent US TV from the early 00's, but it had the kind of whole-hearted sincerity you just don't get anymore. Not to mention, though mostly focused on the comedic, it had a genuine trauma backstory for Detective O'Malley where his partner was killed by a reptilian shapeshifter while disguised as none other than O'Malley himself.

While mostly following the "creature of the week" format, there were overarching storylines for each season. In season 2, a kind of Link King was discovered and a mysterious, apocalyptic plan put into motion, leaving the season on a cliffhanger which the creators clearly expected to revisit. But, alas, it was not to be.

There are two ways a return of Special Unit 2 could go, the first of which is to finish the story. Landes and Lee return as O'Malley and Benson and, given the hilarious schlock the show already sported, don't even address the 20+ years of aging they have both done. Better yet, use an established Link to explain the rapid aging (no spoilers as to which Link that is).

The second way would be to tell the story of SU2's inception, possibly starring a young Richard Page at the early days, or O'Malley's rookie years. But, this is certainly an "as well as" option. We need, nay, deserve to know what happens.

This completely passed me by; I've never heard of SU2! It sounds like fun though. Would you say it's worth watching now even with the story unfinished? Also, welcome to Just About! Oh it’s absolutely worth watching. I binge the whole series about once a year around the spooky season. It’s immensely quotable and the intro credit song was my ringtone for years. You should be able to find it on YouTube; it is truly a forgotten gem.

I think I shall take you up on that introduction!

Alex Sinclair's avatar

I've now added it to my (admittedly very long) list!

I would bring back Shadow and Bone because HOW DARE THEY END IT ON A CLIFFHANGER LIKE THAT? And we can’t read the books to find out what happens because the show is completely different to the books. I need to know!

Hannibal (2013)

The first two seasons are masterpieces of horror. Beautifully shot, incredibly acted, well-written, and gone far before its time. I felt season 3 lost its way a bit, but Hannibal's worst moments still set a bar that most TV series can only dream of achieving.

There are some seriously incredible stills I could share here if they weren't downright disturbing. As an aside feature request, I think spoiler tags should wrap around images so we can protect the innocent eyes of the more squeamish.

Nicole's avatar

Completely agree - season 3 starting to veer a little bit but the first two seasons were sensational and they had plans to go right through the Silence of Lambs storyline.

I wish that they didn't cancel Game Of Thrones. The show has so much potential, and it has five seasons, I think it's a crime, you should see it through to the end! There's at least another 6 seasons of content to be made!

Stannis is dead, Jon's Dead, Shrieen's dead, Sansa has fled, Ramsey is sheer dread, Arya is stabbing Ser Meryn's head, Dorne should have less said, Cerci is having to beg...

You can't leave it at that! And for HBO no less, shameful!

Definitely A league of their own (the 2022 series). It built really well on the film and had some of the best LGBT rep i've seen in a LONG time. Also explores ideas of intersectionality really well. The story is amazing but I feel like they assumed they were getting another season because so many plots are unfinished by the end! So frustrating that they cancelled it grrrrrr

Stargate Universe

Sadly it was cancelled after the second season and I still don't understand why. It was such a refreshing take on the SG universe with it's main setting being a ship. The characters were very well written and the actors, especially Robert Carlyle and Ming-Na Wen did an outstanding performance.

I wouldn't even mind that the series got cut short, but what makes me fuming is, that to find a rushed conclusion they had to alter the originally planned cliff-hanger ending of season 2.

Spoiler warning here if you haven't watched the series yet!

Season 2 ended with the main protagonist Eli being the only one still awake on the ship as everyone else had to hibernate due to them running out of supplies with no inhabited planet in sight.

The original plan however was for Dr Rush to be the one who gets to watch over the ship's systems and given the previous events of the season we know that he had a lot of conflict with the rest of the team and the consciousness of his beloved lady has been transferred into the ship's systems. There were hints that he had plans. Plans which the others would have not approved of. I want to know what they were, I want to see him cause chaos!

SGU was phenomenal. I had been late to the party discovering Battlestar Galactica and found SGU right after finishing the series. It had that same “every day is a new, catastrophic problem” I felt helped wean me off not having anymore BSG to watch.

Lanah Tyra's avatar

BSG is another favourite, and indeed SGU gave that same vibe.

And since we are at Stargate, Atlantis could have seen another season or two easily. They never really finished the replicator storyline properly.

I would like to bring back Lockwood & co. as it felt like a cross between the Phasmaphobia video game and Blades in the dark TTRPG. It had a good story and there were lots of interesting things going on and I would love to see more of the world building.

Hey Groblin! Thanks for submitting and welcome to Just About! We're looking for a minimum of 120 words for this bounty, could you hit 'edit' and add some more detail about Lockwood & Co, and why you want it back?

FUN INC's avatar

Immediately off the top of my head, Dexter (New Blood) needed longer back on the box. Without going into detail about it's ending, I was annoyed!

Thanks FUN INC! We're looking for at least 120 words for this bounty, could you say any more?

If anyone has ever heard of the cancelled Netflix show 'Everything sucks', I think it was one of the best depictions of the awkward, uncertain and uncomfortable nature of maturing and being a teen. Along with its LGBTQ+ representation, it is one of few pieces of modern media that truly captures how awkward it can be to be a teen, to assume you know everything to find out you know nothing! Unfortunate this show only lasted one season

The casting was one of few that also felt attainable, pretty much all of the actors felt like they were accurate depictions of teens, which is rare for much modern media. That is definitely something I valued in the show, as I watched it when I was a similar age to the characters and didn't feel like they portrayed something unattainable. This along with its LGBT representation really makes a case for it being renewed, providing something we dont get anywhere else.

It also had some great up-and-coming actors in it that I believe didn't get to show the full extent of their abilities.

Alex Sinclair's avatar

This sounds great. Would you say it's still worth watching for the one season?
