Yet sometimes, it can lead to wasted potential that isn't realised until late in the artist's career. Consider Adam Sandler in Uncut Gems, John C. Reilly in We Need to Talk About Kevin, Hugh Grant in The Gentleman, or 'the McConnaisance' - the term given to Matthew McConaughey's abrupt shift from romcom eye candy to dark and complex lead actor.
