Funny you ask this. Last night I went to see the theatrical adaptation of My Neighbour Totoro (which was unbelievably good for the record), but I was thinking while watching it that that's a more or less perfect kid's film that can be just as easily appreciated by adults as kids. There's an emotional depth to the film that might not resonate with kids as much, but then the fact it doesn't resonate with kids so much feeds perfectly into the themes of the film itself.

I think a similar thing can be said of the Toy Stories films, and probably all Pixar's stuff when they're at their best

If we're discussing animation, anything by Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli is remarkable.

I'd also like to mention 'Grave of the Fireflies' (1988), directed by Isao Takahata, also from Studio Ghibli. This film is incredibly deep and emotional; it's a powerful watch even for adults, requiring a bit of bravery due to its intense themes.

I do really appreciate how Studio Ghibli never insults the intelligence of their audience. They seem to understand that children can consume and understand complex themes. I've never seen grave of the fireflies - will definitely check it out :)

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind holds such a special place for me. I saw it when I was fairly young it left such an impression on me. I still can't watch the final scene without welling up 🥹

If I were to suggest one, I'd go with 'E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.' You know, as I'm typing this, I realize it's been around 30 years since I last saw it. This might just be the perfect time for a re-watch!
