I was showing my partner Little Britain last night (surprised they still have it on iPlayer) and I realised that comedies around that era heavily relied on catch phrases.
From Andy's "Yeah, I know", and chavvy Vicky Pollard "yeah, but, no, but", a corner stone of Little Britain's comedy would have these sound bites peppered throughout the sketch.
This didn't stop at the Lucas/Walliams production though.
Catherine Tate's breakout character Lauren Cooper had "Am I bovvered?", and the ChuckleBrothers show "To me. To you." It was even satirised in Extras, as Andy Millman is fatigued by portraying a comedy boss with the catchphrase "Are you 'avin' a laugh?".
When I think of comedies now, I can't see many with these unique punchline catchphrases anymore. The last well known comedy on my mind that had them was Friday Night Dinner.
What do you think? Are there any catchphrases that stick in your mind? What do you think is the trend in modern comedy?
(also does anyone else think that comedians cross-dressing is a little too much a trend: again Lucas/Walliams but also Key & Peele)
