Oh boy, I've had a photo sitting in my album for four years just waiting for this moment! My favorite artist is Simon Stålenhag; I absolutely love his melancholic approach to retro-futurism and have all his artbooks on my shelf. While watching the Amazon Prime series 'Tales from the Loop' (2020), I constantly felt as if I were watching his drawings come to life. Every frame was so well-balanced, perfectly preserving Simon’s distinctive style, colors, and shapes.

To confirm my impression, I paused the video at a random moment – a scene where a man in a car is returning from shopping in the evening – and took a photo. Then, I compared it with one of his artbooks, and there was no doubt about it; it was unmistakably Simon Stålenhag's work. See for yourself

And here is some of his paintings

Funnily enough, I very almost watched this for the first time at the weekend but I ended up binge-watching Griselda instead. Now I have your recommendation, I'll return to it. You're right though, these frames are art.

You need a mood for it, it's from the same league as Severance or Black Mirror. I recommend watching them with someone else, as part of the entertainment comes from the 'kitchen talks' after the episodes – sharing perceptions and discussing different viewpoints on the things you’ve seen. It can really enhance the viewing experience!

Thanks, I'll do just that. If it's anything like Severance or Black Mirror, I'm going to enjoy it

The fourth season of True Detective, aka Night Country, takes place in a fictional town called Ennis in Alaska during 14 days of night. Even though it's set in Alaska it was filmed in Iceland so of course it includes a lot of gorgeous landscape shots and beautifully framed shots of the town, but the one I'm submitting is a bit different. For one, it's not set at night but it's just so hauntingly perfect. It's of one of the two main protagonists of the show stumbling onto something so horrific that she's at a loss for words. The scene is quite shocking as the viewer has been learning the details of this scene right up to this point. I won't say anymore because of spoilers but I will just say you need to go watch this show ASAP.

I'm an episode or two behind, but I've been enjoying Night Country - it's an interesting spin on the format, and I'm intrigued that they're leaning into the supernatural elements that have only been hinted at in other seasons. Beautiful shot.

I haven’t watched any True Detective but Season 4 really interests me because it was directed by Issa Lopez who did the incredible film Tigers Are Not Afraid. Would I have needed to watch the any of the preceding seasons to get it? I’ve heard they are all stand-alone, but I’m not sure.

They are all stand alone so you don't need to watch previous seasons. Season 4 does have a few (mostly visual) references back to Season 1 but nothing that you would need to know - to be honest I missed a few until a couple of episodes in I thought "Oh yeah!"

As further evidence that you don't need to watch the earlier seasons, I've completely missed each and every one of those Season 1 references (and I've watched Season 1 twice). I'm enjoying S4, but if you were going to start anywhere, I think the first season is widely regarded as the best. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are a dream team.

Glad I'm not the only one that completely missed all the Season 1 references!

Since this post, I've learned of one (the parental connection)

Moonlight directed by Barry Jenkins is my absolute favourite film - it's so beautifully shot :) This is the last shot of the film after it's spent 2 hours ripping your heart to SHREDS

would recommend every1 to watch it ^-^ (def deserved that oscar sorry lala land)

That is a beautiful and evocative shot. I haven't seen Moonlight yet, but I've heard great things. Thanks for submitting!

The Lovely Bones is definitely my all time favorite movie. It’s a tragic, yet beautiful story. This is the moment Susie tells Holy she’s “almost” free. It’s such a wonderful movie, definitely a tear jerker though :,)

I usually don't watch many historical movies. But when I watched 2023's Napoleon, I remember how they managed to capture the sceneries of the covered locations really well. Maybe because it was in stark contrast to the rest of the movie, which I honestly did not enjoy that much. But at least there was the occasional treat for my eyes.

I picked this shot of Napoleon (Joaquin Phoenix) looking at a weathered sphinx, because even from the still image you can see how feels. In a world so vastly different from his home, he has no actual clue what he's doing there or why.

Thanks Cyrus! I've been on the fence about watching Napoleon, and it sounds like that's where I should stay for now. Great screengrab!

Alien 3 - One set of chompers is not enough

In this scene from Alien 3, the alien that is loose in the prison foundry comes really close to Ripley and scares the bejesus out of her. Moments after killing the doctor, it gets real up close and personal with Ripley. The alien hisses and opens it's jaws wide, and then another baby mouth shoots out too. Ripley is terrified, but after sniffing her the alien leaves her.

Later we find out Ripley is host to the alien queen, and the alien needed to let her live, to avoid killing the baby queen.

Did they ever establish a reason why there's a mouth inside its mouth? I've always wondered.

Philip's avatar

Not that I know of.

Obviously it helps the alien appear more horrific. 😁

Alex Sinclair's avatar

It certainly does that :D

My guess it's was inspired by pharyngeal jaws. The second mouth is used as a weapon for swift strikes.
