So far, this has been an extraordinary platform with not a single incident in sight (to my eyes at least) with only one instance of an argument which was just a healthy debate.

Personally, congratulations on that

But if we were to open up to the wider public, the number one thing I could see happening is the perception of unfairness, or miscommunication

For example, recently, I saw a bounty out out, and someone clearly put their heart and soul into their writing, but it just missed the crucial part of answering the bounty question.

Now, when you've put in so much effort, its clear you think "Oh yeah, this is a winner and this is exactly what the question is asking" and the shock of not getting the bounty win may surprise some and having some potential repurcussions.

Maybe to combat this, we have more feedback/tutorials on how to do it exactly? I wouldnt mind helping out if need be too

Thanks, Samuel. This is really welcome and helpful feedback!

This is great, thanks Samuel - we shall take it all into consideration!

No problem, Ford and Alex Sinclair! Glad to be of assisstance

Also, when is the next bug reports coming out? I have a few things to drop in

Thanks for the kind words, Samuel 😊

If you've come across something then you're welcome to start a new post, or let me know here and I'll make sure it's reported.

I’ve just started reading though everything and would never normally reply to a post unless I was 100% sure I was safe in doing so, this is the main reason…

From my experience miscommunication leading provocation.

A lot of this can be difficulty with the English language – it has a “tone of voice” (if you get what I mean).

Something that may seem ok to one person, will be taken as offensive by another, and because of this it can then be seen as provoking an argument (I’ve deleted whole conversations because of this).

It doesn’t always help when this is the intention of the individual posting the reply – I always think, would you say that to the persons face, probably not so why do it on social media…

I’m not sure how you would be able to manage this as it is very subjective, and tutorials would be very difficult to write teaching “tone of voice”.

That is definitely one of the biggest challenges with communicating online. Even in person it can be easy to misread the tone, but text makes it so much harder!

By taking our time to grow a welcoming and supportive community, together we will set a friendly tone on the platform. My hope is that this will mean messages are posted with good intentions and read with positive interpretations.

It's down to us all to set the tone, and I'm grateful for everyone on the platform for doing their part!

Definitely agree with bounties being a potential source of conflict - with misunderstanding the bounty expectations or even jealousy if the same people frequently win.

Then there's people who think their honest unfiltered opinion is the one they should share.

Or those who don't even care, but enjoy getting a reaction out of others.

Whilst we can just slap on a temporary ban or give out a warning, it will never suffice with some.

I don't recall having to say anything about me promising to uphold any values on signup, or a competency/understanding check, so maybe that could work? I only had to "agree to Terms and Conditions" and I'm the rare few that do actually read it

It would end up being too much effort for any trolls to try and create multiple accounts

It would also ensure that the persons wanting to use JustAbout have to acknowledge the rules

What do you (and others) reckon?

Boomer's avatar

As we approach the next stage on the roadmap, we're looking at the signup flow. I've not got any specifics to share right now, but this is something we're talking about internally.

These are definitely things we're keen to watch out for. We want people to feel like this is a place where they belong, but if that involves baiting people into bad-faith arguments then we'll have to address that.

As for the bounties, we're keeping things like this in mind as the platform develops. The last thing we want is for a fun way to engage (bounties) to become a driver of hostility, but we're confident we can adapt if the situation calls for it.

Samuel's avatar

Maybe, in order for people to start participating in bounties, they have to engage helpfully in conversations beforehand, giving feedback, or constructive talk and general discussion beforehand?

Say like, 5 messages and a total of 10 reactions on their comments? Trolls won't go out of their way to do this

Also, how strict are we/how will the staff ensure that there isnt an underage group using the application? Ask them a maths question?
