It’s fair to say that this year’s Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 3, didn’t go down brilliantly. As usual, a vocal contingent of players have shared some strong feelings about it online. Design Director Zach Hodson addressed this feedback in a blog post, saying the developers "...use the negatives as motivation to get solid fixes and improvements out as fast as we can."
Negative feedback can be helpful, but it can also turn into one of the most harmful phenomena of online communities, and one which we are determined to minimise at Just About: toxicity. As our platform evolves, we’ll continue to seek feedback from you, our members, so we have a personal as well as business interest in the question of how it’s shared, understood, and acted upon.
As we grow together we want to understand how we can facilitate constructive feedback, and what can be done to prevent it from becoming the harmful attacks experienced all too often by game developers online. When does constructive critical or negative feedback cross the line into toxicity? Why does it happen, and what can we do to stop it?
