What is your role at Just About?
My title is the Head of Growth Marketing and it's my job to build and implement our marketing strategy. If you saw the Marketing at Just About post before Christmas, you'll have already seen that the team and the term 'marketing' cover a lot of different things.
Ultimately, my priority is to grow the platform by grabbing people's attention and bringing all you fine folks on board.
Why did you join JA, and where did you work before?
Previously, I've worked across sales, marketing and strategy at TIME, Twitch, and Fandom, so creators and community are at the core of my working life.
Having spent almost my entire career in gaming, entertainment and news platforms, the opportunity to be on the ground for a new one was really exciting. Start-up life is like no other work and, as chaotic as it can sometimes feel, it offers a unique opportunity to touch so many parts of a business and influence what it will become. Most important of all, the mission of creating something based on passion, fairness and recognition for members felt so right to me. How could I resist?
How did you get started in this industry?
After university, I interned for the world's first long hot water bottle company - yes, really. It was the rather brilliant side hustle of a man who I can say to this day is one of the greatest salespeople I've ever met. It was never something I'd have been able to do forever, simply due to the logistics of it being too far from home, but it did give me some great sales and marketing experience and that's what made me realise this was an area I was really interested in. Better still, the boss gave me connections to Wikia, which became Fandom, where I had my first permanent role. Like lots of people I've met in this industry, I knew I loved gaming and entertainment - I had already had some work experience at TotalFilm magazine - but I'll be forever grateful that luck played its part in getting me through the door.
Non-work quick-fire round
Favourites:
Game - The Witcher 3, as you may well have seen me saying all over the platform!
Film - The Dark Knight. Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and The Shawshank Redemption are close seconds.
TV Show - Is it too early to say The Last of Us? A few of my other favourites have gone downhill after too many seasons so I'll go with Bob's Burgers.
Music - Taylor Swift, Fleetwood Mac, Foo Fighters, Megan Thee Stallion, Queen, Halestorm - this question's too hard!
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
This is a tough one. I love Portugal - the food, the people, the sea, and the scenery. It's all amazing. However I have family in Canada and Vancouver just might be my favourite city in the world. Plus a cooler climate would be priority number one for my dog, Rose. That's her in the picture; she is fiesty and perfect. This is her world and we are all just living in it.
What did you want to be when you were a kid?
I went through a bizarre phase of wanting to be an interior designer and, to this day, neither I nor my parents know what triggered it since they were pretty sure I was too young to really know what one was! Naturally, many an hour (or week) would be later spent playing The Sims.

Aside from giving my dog literally anything her little heart desires and gaming, I am a very beginner-level yoga enthusiast. Definitely don't ask me to stand on my head, but I can put my hands up and admit that my instructor is absolutely right that it all comes with practice and consistency. So yes, I've become exactly as annoying a yoga person as you'd fear.
