Agree with the small team stuff in a general sense. I really miss working in a close knit, super motivated, punching above their weight small team.

Annette's avatar

It sounds hokey, but I love the Reverse-Monkey-Wrench-Gang feeling of small-team dynamics. That goes double (triple!) in a professional setting that's this stoked on the task of magnetising really amazing humans from the savage wilderness of the intertubes to share an optimal home base. I lurve it.

How big is your team now?

Dave's avatar

Around 25 I'd say, but it's regulated fintech so little to no risk appetite v the team of 4 I was in elsewhere where we probably got more done in a day between us than we all would in a week.

Annette's avatar

I’ve been there! 😅 It’s hard to explain to people who haven’t had the experience how 4>25, hey?

Was your small-team experience fintech, too?

New challenges, new projects

Annette's avatar

What challenges really light you up? ⚡️

Sturmer's avatar

Anything that I've longed to try but lacked the courage or motivation for, essentially stepping out of my comfort zone, has been great. Delving into movie-making and anything related to cameras was a fantastic experience. Fanfics, too, have been an exciting venture. Also, those simple questions that often take days to unravel and find real answers to have been incredibly rewarding. Painting with my kids was a funny challenge too

We’ll keep ‘em coming! ✨

What parts of the platform make it challenging (or frustrating) to participate? Any recent “argh nevermind” moments you can tell me about? 🤔

Sturmer's avatar

All my “argh nevermind” moments I instantly share in a feedback thread. And then use workarounds =)

Annette's avatar

So very grateful for the feedback. Keep it coming! 🙇🫶

Doing a bloody good job IMO and i live here :)

Annette's avatar

Yay! 😁 …What could we do that would just, like, send you absolutely to the moon with delight?

EveOnlineTutorials's avatar

Honestly, at this point, I think this place is perfect, the only thing I think the place needs is a sub-menu up at the top "Closed Bounties". Because sometimes it's good to go back and reference etc.

Annette's avatar

That, my friend, is totally already on the docket. Squee! 🤸

Then IMO, JA has the right direction, I am always if not honest, blunt. Just About has filled a hole in my life and given me a goal each day, when you have MH issues like myself, your life is about daily goals and things to do, to keep yourself occupied. I think it's all good fun on here and the number one thing I love on here is there is zero toxicity.

Annette's avatar

Daily goals FTW. Little victories keep the wheels turning and only just keep adding up to big victories. Sending good energy your way for your MH journey. We're cheering for you. 🫶

My own style is now and has always been to err on the side of clarity, which can sometimes be taken for bluntness, especially if someone was expecting a problem to be tackled with a more...politics-first?...kinda vibe. From that perspective: I absolutely appreciate the weight another tell-it-like-it-is type giving the 🫡, and I thank you for that!

keep up the great work!

Annette's avatar

Thanks, from all of us! 😁

What's been your favourite thing just-about-Just-About so far? Least favourite?

FUN INC's avatar

Favourite thing is that my voice is heard, and I get rewarded for saying useful / beneficial things to others!

Least favourite thing is that it took this long for a platform like JA to arrive on my doorstep!

Annette's avatar

We're glad you're here! 😁

I would love to know what it was about JA that first made you think 'hey, that sounds alright!' and let us in the door—like, the thing that got you interested before you actually settled in and started poking around in earnest...even if it isn't the core reason you stick around. It's really challenging to list the right stuff "on the tin" when there's so much we're striving to do, and getting a handle on what invitations get folx excited enough to dive in...well, your thoughts on this are very appreciated! 💛

FUN INC's avatar

I was sceptical at the start - it sounded too good to be true. That said, i registered, and got involved. I think I've been around since August - so relatively early in the process for JA, and very early for the EVE community side. I think what helped me really get on board was that i felt like i was actually contributing to the EVE community - that made me get behind it as much as i have.

Annette's avatar

Ossum. Thanks for the insights, and thanks for being here! 🙌

Reflecting on my start-up journey, I started with a tiny team of just two, expanding to five, and over a few years, grew it to around 20. As the company matured, I was faced with the challenge of scaling our tools and processes to accommodate over 100 people. As my overhauling work was done, we managed to hire over 50 people in just six months.

Interestingly, many of our rapid 'start-up era' solutions evolved into technical debt, significantly hindering our scalability and agility today. We're now channeling resources into rectifying these MVP hacks and shortcuts.

In terms of speed, I believe the company has become more efficient. I’ve formed several independent, cross-functional teams, each consisting of 3-5 engineers plus support. Each team operates with the agility we had in our early days. Moreover, the structure allows for flexibility in tackling complex problems or larger tasks by altering team compositions for specific mini-projects or collaborating across teams. This approach has undoubtedly led to faster delivery and, more importantly, a significant improvement in quality.

We still keep a 'family-style' culture and values, patched with some bureaucracy to lower the chaos level.

Annette's avatar

It's such a balance, hey? I love early-stage startups because I myself am a builder:optimiser hybrid and I thrive in the uncertainty...

Are you a FTF? ...Sounds like a bootstrap? I want more storytime! Strong work 🤩💪

Sturmer's avatar

I'm not entirely sure what FTF stands for, but yes, our company is bootstrapped and has been profitable for some time. As the COO and a system designer, I have a deep passion for building systems, setting them up, and then moving on to new challenges.

We've divided the company into two main segments: one is our safe harbour, which encompasses our stable products and clients, and the other focuses on wild, experimental MVP/pivotal projects. This latter section is where our team members who thrive on innovation test out their crazy ideas. These projects either fizzle out or successfully integrate into our core products. So there is always I choice for employees - be fast and wild, or be steady and well controlled, and you can switch if get bored.

Currently, we're delving into some bizarre concepts that blend web3, non-custodial crypto, and traditional banking.

But all this talk is about my day-job. In this space, I usually share experiences and challenges from my hobby-job as gaming journalist.

Annette's avatar

Very, very cool! I love the mild/wild setup you describe, and the permeability afforded to the team to move between those spaces. The combinatorial creativity, too! Speaking of combinatorial creativity: do you find that the skills of your day gig and your cross-pollinate?

(FTF = first-time founder 🤗)

Sturmer's avatar

Even though I've been part of the team from the very beginning, I'm not actually one of the founders; I joined as an employee. As for skills, definitely - the ability to interrogate and understand people, a skill honed from my journalism background, is immensely useful in managing projects and people. It also helps to have the skill to express thoughts clearly and structured, get to the point.

Annette's avatar

The curiosity inherent in a journalistic bent has got to be such a boon for your work as well. Sounds like your gig is fruitful and interesting, with continually growing surface area to learn and make a difference! Heck of a time to be in "bizarre" fintech stuff, too. I'm hecka intrigued by your story 😄
