Some bass jokes to cheer you up!

I play a bit of bass for recording and I think it's quite fun. It's closer to Guitar Hero than playing guitar, at least at the low level that I can play, since you're just playing single notes at the right times. The absolute most basic and easy way to play bass is to focus on the root notes, so if the guitarist is playing a C Major chord, you play C on the bass. If they're playing G# Minor, you play G# etc.

You don't need an amp to practice, but you will need one play live

What is your brother's band?

100% with you on the root note stuff! That's how I used to get through learning my bands new songs before eventually adding a bit of variety the more confident and comfortable I became.

That Guitar Hero comparison is sort of why I feel like this is an achievable goal, it's not going to be too much of a learning curve for someone with basically no musical background. The reason I asked about the amp is because I've seen lots of folk say you should get one to practice, just so you know exactly what you'll sound like to everyone else when you do play live, but then plenty of people saying it isn't necessary at all.

Their band is M/X - recently played Dot To Dot, 2000Trees, and Harbourfest, plus they have Attitude Fest coming up, along with a support slot for DZ Deathrays and lots more exciting stuff in the works when they launch their first EP.

I play/played bass - though I'm trying to pick it up again.

I started out with just finding bass tabs of songs I loved and trying to play along with them. My mind doesn't read sheet music well but tabs were a god send for me at least. I was never great at playing but I found a level comfortable for me and the music my band was playing.

This was started way back in 2001 so I'm sure there's a plethora of good bass tutorials out there now!
