It's been a long time coming, folks, but Starfield is finally here. Endless hours exploring the stars await, but if you’re still on the fence or just looking for something to read when you can’t play, we thought we’d round up everything Bethesda has said about the game so far, so you know what to expect.
Firstly, we'd recommend the official Starfield timeline, which is on the homepage of the Starfield site if you scroll down a little. Skimming down here will catch you up with everything you need to know about the past 280 years before you jump in, in the year 2330.
The main beats are that humans were on Mars by 2050, and living there by 2100. New Atlantis - the biggest and main city in Starfield - was founded in the Alpha Centauri system in 2160 by the United Colonies. It didn’t take long for the settlers to start fighting each other - 36 years, in fact, when the Narion War began. That lasted for 20 years and is the first sign of everyone in space not being one ginormous, happy family. Constellation, the main faction in Starfield, was founded 61 years on from the signing of the Treaty of Narion, and started investigating a bunch of mysterious artifacts in 2310.
Now you know the timeline, make sure you're fully caught up on the Gameplay Deep Dive that was shown off a few months ago. From the main quest and factions to ship building and outposts, there is a lot of detail here. Perfect to watch while your game downloads!
Starfield has a handful of cities, and three of the biggest are New Atlantis, Akila City, and Neon. Bethesda produced three *stunning* animated shorts that tell a tiny backstory for one citizen in each of these bustling hives of activity, and they are well worth a watch to immerse yourself in these worlds.
The future (ie, DLC)
While we're only just taking our first steps into the Starfield, any true pioneer always has half an eye on the future. Todd Howard confirmed to IGN back in June that the first story expansion is called Shattered Space, and it's already well into development. He confirmed Bethesda will be doing "a lot of add-on content", and if you've picked up the Premium or Constellation editions of the game, this first one comes included.
As befits the most anticipated game for years, so much has been written about Starfield elsewhere on the internet that you could keep reading for almost as long as it'll probably take you to finish the game, but that's all the important stuff that Bethesda itself has said. So what are you waiting for? We'll see you in the Settled Systems.
