I quit Twitter not long after the Elon Musk takeover, although I do still have my secondary music account but I don't use it much. I did sign up for Bluesky mainly because I wanted a place to post videogame screenshots and I because still kinda need a rambling outlet. I like Bluesky but it's so quiet. I'd love it if there was a bit more action on there.

hard agree about the BlueSky - it's a great place but dropped off due to lack of engagement with posts. I also dislike that the app's translation feature just opens up safari google translate whilst Twitter just does it in app (when it works)

In short, no.

As you mentioned, I choose platforms based on their core alignment. For expert and thoughtful discussions, I rely on Reddit, StackOverflow, and JA. For video content, I use YouTube, while Facebook serves for marketplace sales.A new social platform must address issues better than existing ones, and it should have enough content and a community of friends or experts to engage with. For example, I do not use TikTok because it doesn't address any of my needs and seems like a pointless addition to my app list. As a gamer, my free time is tightly scheduled, so I don’t need another time sink.

p.s. forgot about linkedin! but it doest change the core idea of my post.

Stack overflow is a social media site? I thought it was Quora for programmers?

LinkedIn I find is just a place to show off professionally and to 'network'

Sturmer's avatar

Yes, same as Quora - they all are social media platforms.

Nope, don't have Facebook or TikTok and Facebook, the latter of which has utterly depraved moderation. My old man has been banned before for the silliest things, even for memes and banter. One family friend was banned for posting a picture of her dog. It's insane.

Twitter is my goto for shortform discussions and promotional needs. The discoverability is much better than any other platform imho and rule enforcement is generally fair if sometimes questionable on what's NOT enforced. But community notes is probably one of the best features they've launched in a long time, as it helps to fight misinformation on both sides. Being a community notes contributor is a good feeling, being able to fight back against that and write notes knowing it's making a difference.

I have considered trying Rumble though but I'm not sure what the reach is like for gaming content. I used to use Linkedin and made some good money on there back when it wasn't so spammy. But other than that, I don't see the need for other accounts than what I already have.

You're a community note contributor!? That's amazing.

I've only seen Rumble been talked about as an alt-right haven for 'free speech' but I could be wrong

CelestialFlea's avatar

Took a little while to get in, but yep!

I know people like The Quartering use Rumble to talk about things that wouldn't be allowed on Youtube, which I see as a positive thing. But the platform does have it's issues, but any alternative to YouTube supporting free speech is ultimately a good thing and they've been consistent about it as far as I can tell.

with all these changes I've mostly just been spending less time on social media, which is perhaps a blessing in disguise hehe

I can't really be bothered to find any alternatives and all I really need is instagram to keep making my silly posts and message friends.

Yeah I’ve not been signing up for anymore social sites, they are just time drains which take away from me creating, really feel so much happier and fulfilled when I spend more time creating than consuming! I did sign up for bluesky but it’s absolutely dead, like crickets, threads is probably the one which is taking over from X for me! And Airchat is new to me, I hadn’t heard of it so is it like voice notes? Any good?

I have an instagram to share hobby pictures and for inspiration, Facebook for keeping in contact with friends and family and Twitter for no real reason (I HATE Twitter).

I have tailored my social media experience to be as relevent and as positive as possible by purposely searching for things that intrest me and ignore/ block things I do not like.

As for Twitter, a cesspool of negative, toxic and antagonistic posts, I dont even bother with it other then posting about JA.

I have no desire to start from scratch with some new social media.

I honestly do not use twitter much at all. I find it such a chore to go on there and scroll through. Facebook I’m barely on and same with Instagram! It annoyed me that instagram are constantly trying to get you to download threads! I can’t get on board with any more social media apps.

I don’t even use Snapchat anymore. It was just too annoying to use. Surprisingly the app I use the most is TikTok (just to view) and LinkedIn haha

I still use Twitter (and have a browser extension that changes all the names/logos back to keep it Twitter lol) but I don't post a lot. Its mostly to read posts from the small set of people I follow. I did get Bluesky so I have it ready when Elon finally ruins X and it dies for good, but don't regular check it.

I have FB, but I'm seriously thinking of closing it down as soon as I get that PSVR2 PC adapter. Once I can VR with that, my Quest is going on sale and I'm getting rid of FB.

I have Pinterest but it's just so I can tag images I like, I don't engage with anybody on it.

Beyond that, I don't really think I'll bother with any other social media stuff. I'm on a discord with a gaming community from a streamer I like and now here. That's about as much social as I can handle :)
