Atlas (2013 - 2024)

Boston Dynamics' answer to James Cameron's Terminator Exo Skeleton. It's amazing to see how much this guy has progressed. I saw him take his first few tentaive steps, do his first flip and now he is doing all the above!

The skeptical mind in me is thinking the BD scientist programmed every move and every quirk but it is still amazing that he can do all that so seamlessly and perfect.

I hope you have a good retirement Atlas - you've taken the first small steps for Robot kind

It may be cheating given who I work for but my favourite real life robot is the AV1. It’s a telepresence communication robot used to give children a physical presence in school when they’re unable to do so due to having suppressed immune systems.

I was lucky enough to escort a young man’s AV1 to the England Men’s Football Team’s open training session. All the players were lovely enough to chat to the robot and wish the young guy a safe surgery

At most (if not every) Sandbox Vr location, they have a robot who makes your drinks for you and I was so in awe of it. Especially when it wouldn’t go perfectly since it’s still being perfected, everyone would find it so funny, like drinks and a show

I'll give you two.

My favorite very very real real robot that does real work for us everyday, unappreciated.

I got a chance to work with these little fellas while an Amazon Robotics facility nearby came online. Functionally, they're heavy duty Roombas that then get shelving loaded on to their backs.
Seeing the entire inventory floating and moving can be awe inspiring. A huge chunk of our ability to access products quickly rests on their backs, literally.

My slightly less realistic pick is Sudobashi Heavy Industry's Kuratas

Megabots Vs Kuratas was kind of a dud, but I still yearn for large scale robot combat sports.
Hopefully we'll see another pass at this scale soon.

I don't know much about real robots but I remember seeing something about Pepper and it felt like a really good advert for what robots can do for good.

It's been used in classrooms and care homes, particularly during the pandemic when contactless care was needed but is often deployed as a reception desk concierge in offices and hospitality settings. It can track emotions through use of facial recognition and can be used to "chat" (albeit autonomously) to people to offer information and recommendations for travellers when they arrive at airports and all sorts of things like that.

And the reason I found out about Pepper was this video from 2020 when people weren't able to attend baseball games and a mix of Peppers and Boston Dynamic's Spot robots were used as cheerleaders for the team!

RoBoHon is a smartphone disguised as a robot. The little robot works as a normal phone, with a screen for a belly, but also does more.

The bot can move and talk for call alerts and more. It even has a projector in its face so it can lean forward and project larger images on surfaces. This could be useful for viewing photos,

It's a robot that makes delicious pizzas, I don't think it can get much better than that?!

They didn't go with PaiZZAbot?

  • Pie - pizza pie

  • ai - ...it's a smart pizza bot

  • Za - pizza

  • bot - it's a bot

...that's a missed opportunity right there! 😆

Been to one of my favorite restaurants in Hungary and they had this cute cat waiter robot. They were only using it to go back and forth between the tables and you could place your empties on it (very handy in an all you can eat style place where you would have multiple plates) but according to this video it can also be programmed to deliver your orders. While I think real waiters are still important, this robot can be a great help when a place gets busy. The human waiters can attend to taking orders and assisting customers where conversation is needed, and the robot can help to keep the place tidy and make it quicker for the table to be cleared for the next customers.

And.... it's a cute cat. Do I need to say more?

The South Korean “Robot Supervisor” that had a mental breakdown is by far my favorite just for the tremendous implications of the story.

It was reportedly spinning in circles at the top of stairs before throwing itself down them. The theory is that it was overworked as a civil servant.

We feel you. Rest in Power-saving-mode, Robot Supervisor.

One of my choices is the Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMR), mostly those that are operating in the warehouse. These guys increases work efficiency by automatically navigate through complex spaces by using sensors and mapping, transporting goods very swiftly and accurately, reducing manual labor, and increasing productivity. AMRs can adapt to environments, making them ideal for the ever-changing landscape of a warehouse. An example of the AMRs are those created by Korber.

For me, I would say that my favourite robot would be the Eufy - robot cleaners! I mean I guess I might just be super lazy but I love how innovative this piece of tech is. It’s so cool how it can go back to its “home” to charge and it’s one of those tasks that take a lot of energy to do that it’s almost eliminated. The versitily of this products shows how advanced tech has become. Where I work, they have bigger industrial robot vacuums now so it’s crazy that it’s been developed to the point where it has capacity to vacuum up More dirt!

I thought this was a Roomba

Has to be Ameca which was a guest on this morning a while back, pretty damn crazy that you can speak to it, it has facial interactions, it's facial expressions! We are at the point where its so close to mimick interaction with humans its kind of scary and exciting at the same time! you can almost combat loneliness, one of the funniest moments you need to go watch in this video is at 6.25 where the guy is talking about should we slow down making AI robots because research can't keep up to date and the robot winks at the camera hahah

Sorry but for me it's this dude - Link includes a video - This is just comic books brought to life, it's like a transformer.

I mean seriously, this is a real-life, massive, face-stomping robot that looks straight out of an Anime. It cannot get much cooler than this, I absolutely love it. I REALLY want one, stood outside my house xD

I think this robot is pretty cool because of the way it can be used to help the environment. This is Robo-Fish! Developed by scientists in China to collect microplastics in the water. Hopefully it's solutions like this that will help clear up our oceans though considering the size of the robo fish you would probably need a lot of them.

Hey everyone,

Similar to Lanah Tyra 's submission, I wanted to highlight BellaBot, a cat-like robot waiter.

While I agree that having a human waiter is an important part of the restaurant experience—it’s one of the reasons I prefer dining out to ordering in—I had a different experience with these bots in another environment. At the Money2020 venue, the bots worked alongside human waiters: humans offered drinks while the bots collected empty glasses and cruised around the area. This partnership kept the venue remarkably clean, as empty dishes weren’t left stacking up everywhere.

I have to go for the new next-gen Atlas from Boston Dynamics. We all probably saw all the videos about how advance the previous Atlas has already been, but this one just looks like that next big leap and makes it feel that much more real, and not just a prototype, even if it is still very much in the prototype stage. Boston Dynamics has always been great at showing the world what their robots are capable of, so I can't wait to see what they'll showcase for this one.

Right now, I can't really imagine too many other companies that are so deep into robotics that can catch up what these are doing with Atlas anytime soon, so this is probably going to be one of the earliest mass-produced advance robots.

Lawn Mower Bots!

These bots have literally changed my life! I know it might sound silly, but mowing the grass, especially if you have 8,000 square meters, takes a tremendous amount of effort, even with a rider. And I’m not just talking about the visual appeal; tall grass attracts ticks and other insects, which can threaten kids and pets who love to play outside.

You can deploy several of these bots, assigning different zones for them to manage. They operate silently and unobtrusively, maintaining the lawn on their own. It's a true "set it and forget it" solution. These bots have not only improved the look of my property but also made it safer for my family
