Tech

We still only had an old PC running MSDOS which my mother used for accounting so it wasn't really a thing to keep them on overnight back in the days. I remember how everyone was in panic that the world is going to end because computers will not function properly. And then... nothing happened, life went on like normal :D

I have the feeling though that quite a few people on here were not even born then or were small children and don't know what this was, you might want to give a little explanation. You know tech history lesson for the youngsters :D

Haha true a ltttle history lesson for those youngsters out there who don’t know what this is -

The Millennium Bug, also known as the Year 2000 (Y2K) bug, was a potential computer issue that could have occurred when computers transitioned from 1999 to 2000

  • Cause

Many computer programs written in the 1960s and 1970s used a two-digit code for the year to save memory space. This meant that the year 2000 would be interpreted as 1900 or the computer would shut down.

  • Impact

The potential consequences were catastrophic, as many essential services were controlled by computers.

  • Response

The US government passed the Year 2000 Information and Readiness Disclosure Act to monitor private companies' efforts to prepare.

  • Outcome

There were few major failures when the year changed, but there were some minor issues. For example, the Naval Observatory's website reported the date as 19100, some credit card transactions failed in the UK, and bus ticket validation machines failed in Australia. which is all new to me as I genuinely don’t Remeber anything happening here in the uk lol but someone made a lot of money I will tell you that as I Remeber the selllong software kind of like antivirus to help stop the millennium bug from messing up your pc lol

I won't remember first because I was too young and I didn't have access to a computer back then!

I remember this. There was so much talk about it, some thought it would be the end of the technological age and throw us back in to a new dark age 🤣

Yea, but they spotted this early, and most critical infrastructure was patched years before the event, so it was more yellowish paper buzz
