I grew up watching the building of the New River Gorge Bridge from the very beginning until it finally opened. Many Sunday afternoon's my parents would drive us all up the road to see the works and grab some ice cream.

https://www.nps.gov/neri/planyourvisit/nrgbridge.htmI have a certificate around here somewhere for attending the very first annual Bridge Day Event when they block off half the bridge and allow people to walk on it. BASE jumpers leap off the bridge and one year I watched as one of them lost their life because their parachute failed to open.
I've also white-water rafted under the bridge a few times and highly recommend it. These days they also offer a special walking tour where you walk under the roadway across and back, but I have not done that one.
