Number 1 is Resident Evil 4 without contest. As for another 9, that would probably be subject to change depending on the day/my mood lol. For today and my current mood in no particular order:

Darksiders 3

Bloodborne

Syphon Filter

Half-Life Alyx

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis

Timesplitters 2

Star Wars Battlefront 2

Metroid Fusion

Spec Ops: The Line

Your list reminds me I really need to get to finishing bloodborne and Resident Evil 2. Great list tho!!

Star Wars Battlefront 2

I hope that refers to the original from 2005! :D

Sturmer's avatar

I played only 2 from your list lol

TNTpenguin's avatar

Oh and what games are those?

Sturmer's avatar

Minecraft and Watch Dogs 2

Thomas's avatar

It's only really the top few that are in order but I think my list of all-timers looks something like

  1. Dark Souls

  2. Bloodborne

  3. Fire Emblem: Three Houses

  4. Bayonetta

  5. Hotline Miami

  6. Sonic Adventure

  7. Grim Fandango

  8. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2

  9. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

  10. Super Smash Bros Ultimate

TNTpenguin's avatar

Half of these games are in my backlog and I can't wait to play them!!

Ford James's avatar

That's a very eclectic mix! Huge respect for Titanfall 2 that high, what a game. Here's mine:

  1. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

  2. Titanfall 2

  3. Fallout New Vegas

  4. Bully (Canis Canem Edit)

  5. Divinity Original Sin 2

  6. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

  7. Dishonored

  8. The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

  9. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

  10. Disco Elysium

To be honest, it can change quite a lot, but I have a note stored on my phone that I amend every now and then. Pokemon Crystal, GTA V, and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge could easily sneak in the top ten on any given day.

Thomas's avatar

Disco Elysium is amazing. If this was a top 20, it almost certainly would have made my list. I listen to the soundtrack when working all the time!

TNTpenguin's avatar

Titanfall 2 is genuinely a masterpiece in my eyes, my all time favourite FPS!! Also you list reminds me that I have Fallout NV picking up dust on my steam library.

Ford James's avatar

I genuinely think Titanfall 2 has the best single-player FPS campaign of all time. Effect and Cause is such a brilliant mission, and the whole campaign is paced so well. Might be time for me to re-play it soon, actually. (Also yes play FNV, it's phenomenal!)

TNTpenguin's avatar

In my opinion the mission just after Effect and Cause (The Beacon) is so underrated and overlooked. For a game from 2016 the level is stunning and the run to get the arc and to the titular beacon is unmatched. For me its equally as amazing as Effect and Cause

This is a really tough question to answer on a Monday! 😂

But I really like your way of grouping your top 3/5/10. Allow me to borrow this idea - thank you!

Top 3

  • Portal 2 Obviously I include the first Portal game whenever I recommend someone play Portal 2. This game is a masterclass of comedy, writing, and puzzle games.

  • Assassin's Creed 2 The step up from the first game left such a great impression on me. Mirage couldn't capture the old-school AC energy for me, and to be honest the entire Ezio trilogy (Assassin's Creed 2, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, Assassin's Creed Revelations) is just so good!

  • Max Payne 2 I've been obsessed with this game ever since I played. I still am to this day. A truly unforgettable video game. In my mind, this video game adaptation of a film noir detective action story is, in my eyes, simply perfect. Rest in Peace, James McCaffrey - the most iconic voice in video games for me. 💔

Top 5

  • Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 When this game came out, it was the right game at the right time for me. I still listen to the bands on this game's OST. If you loved this game like I did, try the remakes! They're worth it.

  • Driver Few racing games are as legendary as the original Driver on PlayStation 1. The tutorial remains a staple for sorting the wheat from the chaff when it comes to people's racing game skills. Can you beat it?

Top 10

  • Need For Speed Underground 2 Speaking of legendary racing games, here's another one. Amazing soundtrack and tons of customization. Need For Speed is to this day trying to recapture the spirit of NFSU 2.

  • Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory Stealth perfection, peak voice acting, cool takedowns. I would've killed for a modern Splinter Cell game featuring Michael Ironside again.

  • Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assassins Another stealth game I remember fondly. Sekiro was supposed to be the next Tenchu game... oh well. One day, maybe.

  • Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice I can count on one hand the games that have such a dense, captivating story, with amazing visuals and truly immersive voice acting. I cannot wait for Hellblade 2. It will be on my mind for the rest of the year, I already know it.

  • Dead Space 2 👁️#IYKYK.

To be honest, I've played so many games that I feel like I need to do a Top 20 to truly honor the great games I haven't mentioned yet. Allow me a few honorable mentions that belong on my list of The Best Video Games:

Colin McRae Rally 2.0, Need For Speed: Most Wanted, Tom Clancy's The Division 2, Tekken 3, Transistor, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Fallout: New Vegas, Metro Exodus, The Witcher 3, XCOM 2.

Dead Space 2 - Is it the needle?

cyruz's avatar

It is - though there are plenty of memorable moments. I really hope they'll remake that one next!

TNTpenguin's avatar

OMG I FORGOT I HAVE DEADSPACE 2 COLECTING DUST ON ORIGN

cyruz's avatar

[ Carefully remove dust from Plasma Cutter before use to ensure maximum efficiency. ]

Makster's avatar

Wow, i'm surprised Titanfall 2 is so high up! I've recently beat the campaign so I get it when it comes to the gameplay loop and design.

Is it ranked high due to the single player or also the multi?

Ford James's avatar

For me it's both, but the single-player campaign is what seriously wowed me at the time. I spent a lot of time in multiplayer on both console and PC, but the memories of the campaign are what have stuck with me the longest.

TNTpenguin's avatar

Both with out a doubt. The campaign is a 10/10 experience but zipping around with a grapple missing everyone of my shots cos I suck in mulit scratches an inch no other game can!

Makster's avatar

Top 3:

  1. World of Warcraft

  2. Super Smash Bros. Melee

  3. Persona 5: Royal Top 5

  4. Halo: Combat Evolved

  5. Portal 2 Top 10

  6. Metal Gear Solid

  7. Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes

  8. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

  9. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

  10. The Beatles: Rock Band

TNTpenguin's avatar

MASSIVE respect for having persona 5 royal in the top 3!!!!!

greybill's avatar

I didn't want to order them as they are so vastly different and not comparable. Just all games I enjoy/ed a lot. But I added some comments on why they are on this list.

  1. Eve Online (the original sandbox)

  2. Dishonored (The whole franchise. 0 death runs anyone? :))

  3. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - First Assault Online (A discontinued online FPS - loved the setting and gunplay. RIP First Assault)

  4. Portal 2 (Humor + great voice actors + fun gameplay)

  5. Metro Exodus (The definition of immersion.)

  6. Death Must Die (Still an early access game, but the RPG aspects are so good, pixel-style is neat too)

  7. Call of Juares Gunslinger (A rather short shooter with amazing humor and storytelling - if you like Portal 2, you'll likely enjoy this one too)

  8. The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim (Mods, side-quests, mods, mods!)

  9. Star Wars Battlefront 2 (The original from 2005, not the EA disaster. This is very personal, as it was my first experience of professional E-Sports, playing in the ESL.)

  10. GW2 (On this spot was originally WoW, but I always end up skipping the gear grind. WoW makes your items worthless once the next expansion hits, making it feel like a big waste of time. In GW2 you can go afk for years - but your gear will still be viable when you come back.)

Dave's avatar

Great post. If you played some of these today they just wouldn't hit the same and they need to be looked at with how much I enjoyed them in their day rather than by today's standards. Ordered by hardware/era.

  • Rockstar Ate My Hamster - C64

  • Stunt Car Racer - C64

  • The Secret Of Monkey Island - Amiga

  • Premier Manager 2 - Amiga

  • Sim City - Amiga

  • Theme Park - Amiga

  • UFO enemy Unknown - Amiga

  • Sonic The Hedgehog - Megadrive

  • Ridge Racer - PlayStation

  • Final Fantasy VII - PlayStation

I love it when I see Club Penguin. While it is not in my top ten, I worked on the German version so it holds a special place in my heart and I love to see how much it meant to people.

What a great question. I just spoke to a friend about what types of games we like to play and it is soooo diverse it is so hard to compare.

In no particular order as I can’t decide, but 10 games I would be happy to only have to play:

  1. Monument valley

  2. Limbo

  3. Elden Ring

  4. Skyrim

  5. Stardew Valley

  6. Pokémon Red

  7. Super Mario Brothers

  8. Sonic the hedgehog 2

  9. Horizon Zero Dawn

  10. Fallout 4

Ford James's avatar

You worked on the German version of Club Penguin? That is unbelievably cool! I have very fond memories of trying to tip the iceberg, and that one time I gave away my account details to someone on a YouTube video claiming they could get coloured puffles on free accounts (I know, I know, but I was only like eight years old!), then I logged in a week later and I had a black puffle. Those were the days!

MargotCandy's avatar

awww yay! Love to hear about those memories. We would often log onto the prod servers for the parties as well.

But yeah we were a small team translating and localisation testing the game and then we helped keep it up to date. It was good fun. My QA manager was incredible and between her and my other mentor I started a career in software testing. So I owe that game my career really. :)

TNTpenguin's avatar

My lord-

Even if you just worked as a translator, thank you for helping club penguin becoming as great as it did!!!! You are now my favourite person in this site now!!!

MargotCandy's avatar

I was a localisation tester on the team but did find the odd functional bug 😅💖

I’ll drop a few titles that haven’t been mentioned yet but deserve recognition. In my opinion, these series should not be overlooked:

Baldur’s Gate,

Mass Effect,

Zelda (BOTW and TOTK),

Elder Scrolls (starting from Daggerfall),

Quake,

Half-Life,

Heroes of Might & Magic,

Fallout,

Diablo,

The Witcher.

These aren’t just personal favorites; during interviews, I always ask which projects served as inspiration for new ones, and these are the most frequently cited.

MargotCandy's avatar

oh yes the half life series! I forgot about those.
