As the title states after 4 years since the release of the PS5, out of the 118 million Playstation users, 59 million are still on the PS4 (50%). Currently the PS5 are behind on sales when comparing it to the PS4 after 4 years (59 million - PS5, vs 60 million - PS4).
However the PS5 has had a rougher 4 years compared to the PS4 which can account for the smaller user base:
- Global pandemic followed by global recession - so consumers would stick to existing hardware rather than upgrading
- Out of stock consoles during the pandemic due to scalpers (this may reflect the high sales but lower active users)
- Lack of first party or 'must have games' for system - this is a key one for me as I primarily bought the PS4 for Persona 5 which has now gone multiplatform. Many of Sony's games are being released on PC where it finds a dedicated fan based and benefit of mods
These are my top three reasons for why PS4 users haven't upgraded to the PS5 but I would love to know what the JA communities thoughts are too!
