In case you thought I'm the only Final Fantasy lore nerd out there, I have good (bad?) news for you, I've found another! This is a topic I very much would have loved to cover myself, but I came across this excellent piece of lore explanation and I thought I would share it.
WARNING the video contains heavy spoilers from Endwalker!
We used to have quests for each job where you have learnt a new ability at the end of the quests, and there was a little story to those skills how they came to be, why we have them. This stopped in Shadowbringers, and since then we just have a quest for the various roles like tank, healer and the 3 different types of dps. At least at the end of those quests in Shadowbringers, you get to go back to your original job mentors and tell them about your adventures, but we didn't have this in Endwalker and as far as I know, we don't have it in Dawntrail either (haven't finished the role quests myself yet)
And summoner is one of those jobs which is crying for a quest to explain, how we get our new summons. We got the 3 small ones Ifrit, Titan and Garuda after fighting their respective primals. Our demi summons Bahamut and Phoenix were also related to the story behind a raid series. But we never fought a Solar Bahamut, why are we summoning him then?
If you are interested, watch this video for a possible explanation. As a summoner main since I've started playing, I can't find a single fault in the logic of this fellow FFXIV lore enthusiast. I would add my two cents to the explanation though:
During our journey so far we have learnt about the original Bahamut, the dragon who has died to protect his people against an invading army. The primal Bahamut who decimated the world at the end of 1.0 (the original first instalment of FFXIV) was summoned by his grieving consort, Tiamat. I by creating Solar Bahamut who we acquire at lvl100 to fight by our side to protect our people, we try to honour the memory of the gentle dragon he was in life.
And this is just the possible lore behind one skill. Now imagine how much set and possible lore there is to this game. So I'm afraid, you will be seeing more articles from me. You better run while you can!
