Out of that list, Shroud is a good watch if you enjoy FPS games, and I haven't found him to be toxic much. Plus, as an ex-CS pro, he is really good. Surprised Ninja still holds the top spot though!

My main variety streamer recommendation is CohhCarnarge - I thought he might be in the top 20, but I've just looked into it, and he's actually 271st according to TwitchTracker.com... he has 1.54m followers, but somehow that's practically nothing these days! His streams are usually family friendly though, and he's always giving off good vibes.

That's cool. Counter Strike was my go-to game way back, so I should probably check Shroud out! I've not heard of CohhCarnarge. Just checked out his channel and he seem pretty chill.

I tend to pick a game I'm interested in and look for the smallest streamers currently playing 😅 It'd be nice to have a regular streamer to drop in on every now and again!

wow thanks for sharing, this shows you how massive things have gotten in the streaming space as i just read that article and i legit didnt know most of them yet they have massive followings! very cool to see! I do prefer spending my time in smaller creator streams as the chat (like the actualy chat feed) is way better for having a convo about something unlike the big streamers its just a riot of messages flying by lol but when i do dabble with bigger streamers its usually pewdiepie when he used to stream, dr disrespect and shroud!

It really does put it into perspective that Twitch most subbed (18m) are 1/10th the size of the most subbed YouTube channels (200+m). I couldn't imagine trying to engage with an audience of that size. Even if only a fraction actually engage, those chats have to be next to impossible to use!

Smaller creators do have more of a sense of community to me, for exactly the reason you point out. The chat being a usable space brings the audience closer together, and breaks down the barrier between them and the streamer. I suppose that's another benefit of micro-influencers!
