One of the most iconic characters in the world is about to become free to use.
On 1st January 2024, Mickey Mouse, specifically the Steamboat Willie Mickey Mouse, will enter the public domain.
While there are still restrictions on what can and can't be done, such as implying any affiliation with Disney or using newer Mickeys (still under copyright), but if you play within the rules then your content could sport the iconic ears.
To celebrate this and many others entering the public domain, Tech Dirt are hosting a Gaming Like It's 1928 gamejam over on Itch.io.
Even if you're not into game development, shortly after the jam there'll be a bunch of quirky games for you to stream, all pitching into the buzz around the licenses entering the public domain.
