I confess - I’m using auto thumbnails. This is probably the main reason why I only have 5 subs. So, folks, hear this advice and don’t make the same mistake as me.

At the beginning I didn't care about thumbnails but since I got more focused on the channel I was thinking to go back and make one for all my videos. Not just for views but to make the channel look nicer if someone scrolls through it. Was thinking to remove some videos which don't fit that much with the theme I want the channel to go in. Not sure if it matters or not if you have some videos with 3k view and some with like 50?

From what I’ve seen, it’s time sensitive. Like, the algorithm still has to be placing your content. For that Bounty I mentioned, the video I picked and edited has gotten zero additional views, so I THINK it’s more about recency.

However, revamping old thumbs to draw in new fans scrolling in YOUR page is probably a good idea!

This is very interesting. I've been wondering about the same thing recently because of couple of the creators I follow on YouTube do the same thing. Somewhere 24-48 hours after the video release they change the thumnail, sometimes quite drastically.

My original speculation was that it can be quite eye-catching. As long as YT is still recommending the content, so you see it, at first glance it's basically a new video and I have to check whether I've already watched it. If it wasn't for the YT progress bar below content I've already watched then I would definitely reclick on almost every video they're changing the thumbnail on.

Yes! Exactly. I think it’s a legit demographic swap. I.e. your subs will see it’s from you and click, but strangers might not recognize your thumb strategy. So then you swap it to something more spicy, more trendy, then suddenly bam, you’ve got the abnormal traffic.

That’s what I’ve been trying at least. I make a “normal” thumb and then I make a grabby/spicy one I don’t think my base would connect with.

I may have to experiment with this too soon. Although at the moment I struggle enough to come up with one thumbnail per video, let alone two! And am trying to build a little bit of brand recognition with consistent styling etc.

I'd be very interested to stay posted on what you continue to uncover!

Honestly, you could just save your OG thumb and swap it back after a week to maintain the brand recognition.

But for sure, I’m not shy to bring back old threads haha.
