For me it's going to be a focus on learning more about video editing. Live streaming is my preferred creation just because I love the back and forth with chat and I'm quick witted so it goes well together.

With the baby on the way I'm trying to create more video content which is going to be a lot different for me. With no chat to bounce off I'm going to have to think more about what I'm saying to keep it engaging and then get into editing down a couple of hours video into something that still feels natural and light hearted. Those are probably my biggest things to learn to keep my goals on target for 2024!

As I'm also trying to get back into music making I'm trying to make sure I learn more about my DAW of choice so I can make sure I'm making the most of the tools I have to make music - and a little music theory probably wouldn't go amiss!

That's cool. With how time consuming editing can be, learning more tricks could be a huge time saver in the long run!

Retro Stu's avatar

That's my thinking! That and trying to "get it right first time" while recording videos and things just so it leaves me less to do in the editing stage!

To reach Affiliate on Twitch I'll need more followers and viewers on my streams. To achieve this I'll start making more planned short videos (and not just highlights from a raid) to promote my content on Youtube/TikTok.

Want to make the most of the FF7 Rebirth release hype, so during my first playthrough of the game if I notice any content which I can make a guide about I'll do it as soon as possible, instead of waiting until I finished with the story.

To make it easier managing my Instagram and Twitter channels with meaningful and planned content I'll set a dedicated time when I write and schedule posts for these for the week ahead.

Boomer's avatar

Hopefully it won't take away from the enjoyment of playing it through the first time, but it sounds like it will help you release videos when the hype is still high!

I used to take my time with playing games so I don't mind finishing the story later. But it'll definitely mean I'll have to stay away from social media to avoid spoilers if there are changes in the story. Release date is a Thursday so probably I'll be playing and editing videos all weekend.

Not sure though if there will be any such content in it as the Chronolith Trials were in FFXVI where it took multiple tries to record everything I needed. If it's just the mini games, those can be done fairly quickly and editing shorts from them is also quicker.

Brevity.

Jokes aside - I am going to work on saying less, but in a more impactful manner. Shorts are great for this, and brevity and getting my point across in 2024 is going to be key - in content creation, in my day to day life, in my working life - in all areas. I think it will make me a better person, and content creator.

The goal is to learn more tricks and tools to raise efficiency in video production. Recently switched to 360video camera, it brings great opportunities (especially in places where drones are banned), but it takes a lot of effort to process that content.

The second is to adopt AI assistants and learn how to prompt them for my needs.

Boomer's avatar

That's cool. How do you think an AI assistant could help?

To be honest I don't know much about them, so I might be missing out on a game changer here! 😅

Goal: To be more in-tune with myself.

I know this is not a clear cut goal that you can set clear targets and steps for, but it's easy to do things and stream things for others for the sake of saving face or to be popular. The past year has been a struggle for myself mentally, and I made choices for my stream to satisfy others whilst putting my own mental health and thoughts aside.

This year, in order to help myself and in-turn, help my stream, I am going to try and find the balance of streaming for myself and for others at the same time, in a safe way for myself mentally. It's okay to say no, it's okay to stop streaming earlier than usual if you need to, it's okay to swap games if you need to.

This year, I'm focussing on myself so that I can continue helping others in the way that my channel always has, without taking pieces away from myself at the same time.

Boomer's avatar

That's a great goal. I think more people should aim to build this into their lives!

I've got these little notes pinned next to my monitor to keep me on track, and one in particular feels like it relates to this.

Soul --> Brand --> Money

Do what feeds your soul, then do what builds your brand, and finally do what makes you money.

This only works if you've got the time and luxury to not focus on money first, but it's a reminder that our wellbeing come first. Reputation and money are things that come when you can provide consistent quality, and you can't provide consistency or quality if you're wellbeing is an afterthought.

I love this! It took me hitting rock bottom and being signed off from work twice in 11 months (two different jobs) with depression and anxiety. I thought moving jobs was the solution but when I had that second breakdown I realised that it wasn't a specific job, it was the balance being all wrong. Doing 40 hour working weeks but then adding on 4-6 hours travel a day (depending on how kind the trains and TFL were being that day) I was exhausted and taking no joy from anything. This was before my content creation days but I was so exhausted any time I had for myself was spent just being tired and low.

It's actually hitting that point and while being signed off that I started my online shop and ebay selling, realised I was making enough to cover what was necessary and quit my job. It was scary but I didn't feel like I could feel any worse so if it failed at least I'd tried? You know? That led to starting a podcast which in turn led to me starting on Twitch and then the passion just grew and grew! So whilst I now work full time again for a health charity, it's fully remote so I'm not exhausted from travel and I can clock off and immediately do what feeds my soul!

Boomer's avatar

That sounds like it was really tough. I'm glad you're getting the work-life balance in check, and that you get the time to do something you love 🙂

Do you still podcast, or has Twitch become your main focus?

Retro Stu's avatar

Podcast will be returning! I did three episodes as audio only before I moved it to Twitch and that was a really great way to have a lot more interaction with it. That being said it's been harder to lock people in for it at a time where we can do it live so I'm leaning back to doing audio only again or maybe starting an entirely new pod.

It's great to hear you got on track! I think it's also very important as men to also be very open with our emotions and mental health, something I was always guarding pretty closely, to promote men's mental health and remove the negative stigmas around it. Having viewers means we have the power to influence positive change and thought, and if that helps even one person, then I've achieved what I set out to do already.

Boomer's avatar

Sounds like a great solution all round! Please do share an update when you're back recording. I'd love to check it out 🙂

I hate setting any "goals" for my content to achieve, as beyond just continuing to do what I already do, there's so much luck involved in my content actually getting anywhere. So here's some practical resolutions that I will try and make sure to do myself:

  • Further increase the quantity of videos. Go from 5 long-form and 2 Shorts to 5 long-form and 7 Shorts a week on the main channel, plus podcast whenever possible. On the other channel, 6 Shorts and a long-form video.

  • Find new websites or services where I can finally find more clients or companies to work with.

  • Further define and unify the channel's branding and the branding of the brand as a whole.

Okay, so I did post in the other one and now it's the 1st, this is what my plans are and the team's plans are.

  1. 1-2 videos a day on our EoT channel

  2. We are going to look at our thumbnails and see what we can improve

  3. We are going to try and be more active in the community tab area as well

  4. We are going to use shorts on our Minecraft platform to try and drive more traffic/exposure for us.

  5. Our area of expertise in Eve Online will be expanded to take on more areas within the game.

  6. We are going to plan some more streams and actually do them :P

Just few things we are going to be doing :)

Mine is to start creating long form content for the youtube channel and I have a target of creating 2 long form videos a month and reach 100 subscribers by April. The biggest thing that's held me back is not knowing what to create, so I'm working on a plan for the channel and what direction I want to go in

My New Year’s resolutions for content creation are -

  • 1 evergreen long form video per week per channel.

  • Stick to evergreen content that falls under Help, Hub or hero content.

  • Launch 3rd YouTube this year.

  • No news or non evergreen content creation at all this year.

  • Do thumbnails and titles first and if I can’t make good ones that I think will get a click from my niche I don’t make the video.

  • Less focus on other platforms outside of YouTube:
