According to EVE University, to gank is to "ambush and destroy an enemy, without giving them the chance to fight back." It's a term that is used across many different online multiplayer video games and while it can be immensely fun for the ganker, it's not so much for the victim (gankee?), and as a result, can be a controversial topic.
