Any Star Trek episode with Nichelle Nichols or Whoopi Goldberg. In case someone is not familiar with it, Nichelle played the communications officer Uhura in the original Star Trek series which was a huge thing back in the late '60s. Young Whoopi saw one of the episodes and run around their house yelling "come everyone there is a black woman on TV and she's not a maid!" This encouraged her to become and actress and to then have a role in Star Trek Deep Space 9 is a very nice touch to the story.

I don’t remember where/when, but I definitely heard her tell that story in an interview at one point. It’s awesome!

Well I will now need to start watching some of these female-created shorts but can you please run ahead and check which ones are too harrowing and will break me. Then report back 😅

Haha I’m not sure where your thresholds for harrowing are, but maybe once I’m done I can update with a top ten to give a good sampling of what’s on offer.

There is a series called Etheria you should check out. It’s a yearly short film festival celebrating new/up and coming female horror directors. Those ones tend to be a little more tame overall (as in I can’t think of any with huge triggers) and you should be able to watch all seasons on Tubi for free with ads.

Not a horror film but 20th century women - it's a really interesting deep dive into second wave feminism I love that film <3

Horror film wise? Bodies Bodies Bodies springs to mind. It's directed by Halina Reijn and has a great, mostly women cast. It's a bit silly and people say it's the gen z's generational horror film in the same way scream is gen x's (as in, the film creates tropes and utilises stereotypes based on the generation its targeting).

Also Jennifer's body <3 the critics weren't ready for it when it came out in my view.

Sci-fi movies with great female leads such as Arrival and Annihilation come to mind! They have some horror elements (Personally, I prefer atmospheric horror over e.g. slashers.) but they're mostly existential dread.

Annihilation isn't for everyone and not too many people liked it when it came out, but somehow it always pops back into my mind. Arrival is just a great sci-fi movie period. I rewatched it not too long ago I enjoyed it just as much as the first time.

Arrival is one of the best sci-movies of the last decade, it's fantastic! Also in terms of sci-fi/horror with a female lead, Under the Skin is maybe my absolute favourite film

The bear in Annihilation is one of the scariest creatures in both design and function!
