Happy Easter Sunday! I hope everyone at JA is having a great weekend. Along with videogames, movies also have a history of hiding secrets and references to other media. Whether it is a nod to another one of their works or to another creator? - what are your favourite easter eggs in films?
Below I've listed a few of my favourites. I've tried to avoid some of the obvious ones like Pixar's Pizza Planet Truck, ET in Star Wars, and Alien Skull in Predator 2 (although that last one is really high up there)
Thor (2011) Infinity Gauntlet Yep even before Thanos made his on-screen debut, his infamous population halving glove was seen for a brief few frames in the first Thor movie. As a comic nerd I loved seeing this little bit of lore hidden in this movie.
Captain America Winter Soldier (2014) - Steve's Notebook
Keeping on with Marvel, Steve's notebook on the things he needs to catch up on since being frozen actually changes depending on where you watch the film. So in the picture above it is from America but if you watched it in the UK you'll actually see this list with Sherlock and The Beatles replacing I Love Lucy and Berlin Wall (Up + Down). It's a nice nod to the international appeal of Marvel films and the openess Steve has to other cultures (despite being called Captain America)
Evil Dead 2 (1987) - Freddy Krueger's gloveAny movie buff can recount the Sam Raimi film staples of his favourite Oldsmobile Delta 88 (which has appeared in all his films) and a cameo from my childhood friend Bruce Campbell. However back in the slashing horror 80's, there was a little rivalry between Raimi and Craven. Raimi featured Craven's Hills have Eyes as a torn movie poster prop in his first Evil Dead, Craven retorted by having Evil Dead being played on the TV set in his first Nightmare on Elm Street and finally, we come full circle with Freddy's glove hanging ominously on the workshed in Evil Dead 2. We were supposed to have a Freddy vs Jason vs Ash at some point but creative differences left it up to Wildstorm (DC) to run with the concept instead.
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001) - Chocobo textureWhen this movie came out, RPG fans rejoiced to see their franchise meets the silver screen. When they walked out the cinema, they wondered whether they went to see the right film. Nothing about the Spirits Within represented anything Final Fantasy, except.. maybe a few Chocobo textures found on some pajamas and this poor lads briefcase. At least the next and last film Square Pictures made was 100minutes of fan service with Advent Children.
