Companion tells the story of a group of friends on a getaway going horribly awry when one of the friends’ companions kills their host in self-defense.
And when I say companion, I mean an ultra-realistic AI companion bot which should be literally incapable of such acts.
What unfolds is a wild and darkly comedic series of increasingly desperate attempts, by both the companion and the human house guests, to get the situation under control.
It's a great film and I strongly recommend it. All the twists and turns will keep you engaged, the comedy is natural and not overly slapstick, and the actual drama and age-old question of what constitutes a “person” is represented well without wallowing in the conundrum.
Companion director Drew Hancock describes it as a story of “AI gone right,” and I tend to agree.
This is a solid rental recommendation I don’t think you’ll be unhappy with.
