After gaming for over 30 years, what games I play and how many have changed drastically. When I was a kid and games were £1.99 from the local newsagents, I used to play a massive range of titles, moving on from one to the next quickly (but with a few favourites mostly from CodeMasters or random free games on magazine cover tapes).
Through the later generations (amiga 500/1200, 16 bit era, 32 bit era) this stayed the same other than the prices rocketing and being limited by finances (SNES/Megadrive games were crazy expensive looking back, taking into account inflation) . Ps3/360 era I bought and played so many titles, especially the smaller XBLA releases.
These days I probably read and watch more about games than I actually end up playing them. I have to resist buying the vast majority of things I like the look of because I know I will get no time (or more likely not have the energy/motivation to play anything when I do have free time lol). That doesn't mean I'm not still interested in reading and watching videos about them online though. What I buy/play has changed completely, I tend to stick to just a couple of titles a year, having one long term never ending multiplayer/live service game on the go (Fortnite at the moment due to cross platform and it being a good way to socialise with friends across the country in a squad), then usually one large open world rpg which will take me all year to complete (or never!) that other people race through in a week or two.
Planning on picking Starfield up in September (unless it bombs in reviews) and that combined with Fortnite will keep me occupied to the extent that even if anything else that looks really good comes out, there is no point in buying it as I will never be able to give it the long term time commitment needed to get anything out of it.
The other issue I guess is the technical advancements aren't what they used to be in terms of revolutionising the experience and keeping things fresh, such as the move to 3d with the PS1/2 era and the move to online for consoles for ps3/360.
What are other peoples experiences that have grew up with gaming as one of their big hobbies in terms of how your engagement with it has changed over the years through to today?
