After 21 long years Rooster Teeth will soon be gone. Rest in peace. It was announced yesterday that Warner Bros Discovery will be shutting down the Rooster Teeth company and community platform in the next few months. This is terrible news for their members and staff, some of whom were part of the team for longer than Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Twitch, and Tumblr have even existed. I count myself as one of these members, having been a part of the Rooster Teeth community since the very beginning, and much of what I bring to Just About was learned during my time there.
The death of a social platform isn’t inevitable - we certainly mean to prove that! - but it sometimes happens. Whether or not you were part of Rooster Teeth, maybe you had a favourite old forum or chat room that had to close for some reason. And, not to kill the mood with the weekend so close, but it’s worth a quick Thursday Thoughts to think about those reasons and whether they can teach us something.
So pour one out for Rooster Teeth, and if you spent any time there, or on any other platform that’s not around any more, then share your memories, tell us why you think it closed, what it did well or not so well over the years, and what lessons we can learn as we build our new (and permanent!) home here on Just About!
