Let me throw something on a table first:

I believe the concept of community dates back much further, around 50,000 years ago, aligning with the tribal theory explored in sociological studies. In essence, community dynamics often boil down to 'us' versus 'them', heavily influenced by the environment and external groups. For example, if four people are stuck in an elevator, three of whom live in the building and one who is visiting for a birthday party, a community forms among the residents based on their shared connection to the building, regardless of their prior interactions. This community chain can extend from family to district to city and beyond, typically influenced by geography. However, the internet disrupts these geographical boundaries, fostering entirely new forms of community-based on shared interests rather than physical location.

a community forms among the residents based on their shared connection to the building, regardless of their prior interactions.

There's absolutely an element of tribalism to it, and in fact early online communities were described as internet tribes gathering around the digital campfire.

It's true that the residents may feel a closer association based on living in the same building, but it's their shared culture that fosters the sense of community.

For example, imagine you live in a building with neighbours you've never interacted with. Your childhood best friend comes to visit you after years apart. During their stay one of your neighbours accuses them of stealing or being aggressive. Are you more likely to believe:

  • the neighbour you've not interacted with before, or

  • your childhood best friend, despite not seeing them for years?

Most people would side with their childhood best friend, as they have shared values and norms. The neighbour, despite living close, is more of a stranger.

This is essentially what the internet has done. It's given people the means to choose the communities they participate in, to seek out others that share their values and interests.

Sure, great example! that's the beauty of group dynamics, a friend is part of the inner circle, while a neighbour is considered an outsider in this tribe, It's like an onion. but I like how fast these layers are formed and how borders are determined.

The entire thing is shifting on a moment-by-moment basis, and that's what I love about communities 😊

Every interaction causes us to reassess how close we feel to one another.

Has a friend done something you don't like? Does that mean they don't share your values? Are they making references you don't understand? Do you like them less now or do you adopt those behaviours? Maybe you notice someone you previously disliked doing something you would do. Does that change the way you see yourself? Has that changed the way you feel about them?

There's so much that goes into it! Maybe I can do a follow-up post that connects all of this to social platforms 😄

There is a great video by Core-A-Gaming that discusses the need for a community and how they differ when it comes to different 'cultures'. The example he uses is Costo members aren't a community although they do share the same values: 'saving money by buying in bulk', but they won't support individual members or foster a relationship in a mentor, mentee way to grow a community.

@Boomer I have SUUUPER strong views on this one so I'm going to watch with interest :D

However, one of my favourite videos that is accidentally about community is this one from Kurzegesagt:

It goes into a lot of what you're asking around trust, how groups form and how the internet has completely annihilated our social defense mechanisms. Highly recommend!
