We (the Just About staff) have just got our hands on the all-new post composer 🎉. So what better way to try it out and test it for bugs than to write the post I've been waiting to write since Just About Sports launched over 2 months ago!
I play a game called korfball and have for over 10 years. Korfball is similar to basketball and netball and originated in the Netherlands at the turn of the century. In fact 'korf' is the Dutch word for basket 🧺. The major difference between korfball and pretty much every other team sport is that it is specifically designed for men & women to play together. This makes it a more interesting sport (IMO) but also a way more interesting and enjoyable social activity too.
You can find a quick overview of the sport here:
The big draw of korfball for me is inclusivity. Because it's a lesser known sport in the UK, very few people know much about it when they first start. This means that unlike staple British sports like football, netball etc. nobody expects you to know how to do anything when you start. So new players are welcomed with open arms no matter what their athletic ability or previous sporting experience. The inclusivity also extends to the demographics of people who play. Because korfball welcomes both men and women, it is inherently a safe space for all and we're lucky to have a hugely diverse group of players in the UK, covering the gamut of sexual orientation, gender, and race.
And, more so than any other sport I've come into contact with, the range of ages actively playing within the same league structure is also vast. Because there are relatively few players, every one is coached and welcomed with equal enthusiasm and vigour. This means that a 13 year old and a 63 year-old can find themselves on court together with no significant issues arising. In fact, I was lucky enough to be part of a league winning team that included an 18 year old and a 58 year old not long ago. One on the brink of an international call-up and the other transitioning out of a long basketball career including a spell in the BBL.
So, hopefully I've given you a quick glimpse into what korfball is and why (I think) it's great! But there's far more to discuss so please, AMA!
