I agree that Premium is good value and comes with a lot of benefits, but for me the decision is whether to use X at all, or not. It's a personal moral decision... I wouldn't judge anyone who chooses to use it (or not), but for me, I can't justify it any more...

Even saying this runs the risk of diverting this thread into politics, so I won't do that, so instead... interested in your experience with Grok - what you're using it for, how it differs from ChatGPT etc.

Totally get that. I did start to write an intro along those lines of if you can stomach the stuff that gets pushed outside the subjects you are interested in & the lack of moderation, but removed it. It’s a shame grok isn’t being made available As its own product.

Grok feels like a cross between perplexity, ChatGPT and midjouney.

Perplexity search has that brilliant mode that trawls Reddit, summarises the info & provides the source. Now renamed “social” search, basically replaces using Google and having to add Reddit to the end of every search to get some genuine results & not an affiliate link farm. Can’t see it lasting as Reddit aren’t happy about it. For using grok instead of google, it’s a bit like that. It will give a good summary of what you searched for, use x as it source, followed by links to some source tweets for further info. (Apart from there isn’t any as it’s just a short tweet).

For more conversational, working through an idea, deep dives into a complex subject etc, it feels very much like ChatGPT premium models, Claude ai and so on. I do feel it offers quite a fair & balanced opinion which I wasn’t expecting to be honest.

The image gen stuff, Ive only played around with it for fun, but it seems to work with the simplicity of ChatGPTs conversational style of use, but with the quality of the images of midjourney’s more rigid comma delimited long list of requirements.

This.

I have Starlink and it is truly excellent rural internet, but I just started shopping for nominally comparable alternatives.

Moral and actual privacy/safety concerns have just become very real.

Not sure if Grok2 offers a way to build own models, I picked Openai mainly for GPTs building ability, so I can prompt my own models for certain tasks, like a tools. Some are long term, some are project-based.

Not the functionality you are talking about no. It does have beta api access but nothing like that model builder functionality of making your own gpt. The whole product is a bit weird how it’s baked into x instead of just being its own thing.

I'd love to hear more about your experience with building your own GPTs. I find them really useful when I need to talk out an idea, but they're often too generic for the topics I want to get into.

What's the process of training a GPT and how much source material do you need in order for it to understand the subject domain?

Am I right in thinking you can keep GPTs separate from the wider OpenAI pot of data, so training on a dataset doesn't serve it up to OpenAI?

its complicated to explain, depending on the field and data sources. Sadly I can not upload large massive of data, so typically I pre-process it somewhere else before uploading.

I'm (sort of) with Rupert on this one. Though recent changes made a lot more of the FFXIV community transition over to Bluesky, brands and influencer managers themselves are mostly still on X. So if I don't want to shoot myself in the foot, I kinda have to have some presence on X to keep my small channels discoverable. But I can't morally justify to pay money for it, no matter what value I would get out of it. I have more often days where I say I'll just delete it, so I don't see myself being there for too long... I look at TikTok as the necessary evil, but X is balancing on the border of can't justify using it anymore.

For me the valuable function would be the ability to stream as I do have a decent followerbase there, and streaming there could help my main channels to grow as well. Not very interested in the AI functions. The only AI I use is the normal spell check you get here as well when typing and the automated captions for video editing, because that saves a lot of time and is a massive help as I'm not a native speaker to understand everything correctly.

It’s interesting because I rarely use the rewriting, reformatting, editing functions of ai. I think ai text, even rewriting your own words looks really obviously ai. I feel it’s gone full circle where perfect written English now looks like ai & raw original words & unique writing style (with all of a persons flaws & mistakes), now read more genuine & human & is valued more for its insight than the well written perfect posts & articles etc.

Lanah Tyra's avatar

I don't use the rewriting either, prefer my own writing style. Only the basic spell checking which is there in word processors which underlines the misspelled words with red.

The captions for video editing are very useful as I don't have to type stuff in manually, it will make captions from the audio, and I just need to go through it for any mistakes. It also times them to align with the video. Useful when it's not just a couple of words on a short but you have to caption like a 3 minute segment of a podcast.

What you say about the perfectly written English sounding AI is true. I think one of the things which drives me crazy when I try to use any service where an AI replies is that overly polite tone they speak with. Probably it is how you should be talking in a formal conversation setting, but since less and less real humans write such formal texts it sounds really annoying to me. It could also be a cultural difference, as Hungarian language and way of speech is a lot more blunt and to the point, while in British (maybe American too) culture beating around the bush is a common thing. For me let that be in written or spoken conversation it comes across as waste of time. Just out with it damn it :D

So I been using premium for a while, I still think the ai on offer for the price is really good, all the actual x stuff is a bit meh though. It’s amazing how much unwanted politics and controversy gets pushed to my feed.
